Origin of 'Cooter'

So the term 'Cooter' came up in conversation referring to female genitalia.

We got to thinking just where the heck that came from.

Was it coined before or after the Dukes of Hazard days?
Anyone have any insight?

In many cases, sexually oriented slang terms don't have a real etymology. There have always been new words being created over time. There seems to be humor in people using new and different terminology for sexual terms - actually, for all bodily functions.

Think of how many slang terms there are for intercourse, vomiting, urinating, etc.

Cooter Festival

That is a slang for snapping turtles. Another quote from something I read online..

"And cooter has a vulgar slang use as a name for a central part of the female anatomy. That may relate to the obsolete verb coot, dating back to 1667 and referring to the long slow mating practice of turtles."

Some of them look like hairy little critters... like maybe a muskrat napping on it's stomach between the legs. Critter / cooter... ?

I would expect a sentence similar to that (worse grammar and spelling) from some of the guys here, but not from a supposed female member. 😉
