you have obsessive compulsive disorder, you should get that checked out before worrying about organizing that garbage.

L:\Mp3\Artist\Album\0x - Title.mp3 for full albums. If it is just singles then
L:\Mp3\Artist\Artist - Title.mp3

When I sort by path and filename in winamp, I get all my music in order by artist, then album, then tracknumber.

I have six folders, each covering different parts of the alphabet. Within each folder, I've got all albums organized into folders labeled with the artist name, year of the album, and album title. For example, Ride the Lightning is in a folder called Metallica - 1984 - Ride The Lightning. Each file inside is labeled with artist name, track number, and title. Fade to Black for instance is called Metallica - 04 - Fade To Black.mp3. Anything that fits in those six base folders that's not part of a complete album is just tossed into the folder and labeled with artist name and track name.

For albums:
MP3\Albums\Artist - Album name\Track # - Song Title.mp3

For singles I have 5 categories: Rap/R&B, Various (rock and pop), Oldies, Techno, Etc (for comedy and other weird stuff). A directory structure would look like this:
MP3\Singles\Various\Artist - Song Title.mp3

Unfortunately I itunes is useless to me since it doesn't support .ape files, but Winamp5 has a decent music library which I use when I'm not sure what I want to listen to.

I have 25gb's of music and it's hard to think that someone *could* have more... All of mine are at 128/196. You must have 60,000 songs? I can barely conceive the fact that there are that many songs out there, nevermind songs I'd even listen to.

I organize like this:

Rap folder
Techno folder
Everything else

Band name - Album title Track # - Song name.mp3

Three doors down - Away from the sun 09 - Changes.mp3

Capital used only at first word, never Three Doors Down or Away From The Sun.
I own mostly all of my cds... And I have about 250 cds I haven't put on my computer yet, but even adding those that wouldn't give me but 20gb's more of music...

I have several directories where i keep all my songs

mp3 my recent rips
mp3 a-c
mp3 d-e
mp3 f-i
mp3 j-n
mp3 o-s
mp3 t-z
newmp3 a-k
newmp3 l-z

In each of those directories are subdirectories of "Band Name - Album Name" format
Then the mp3s go in their subdirectories.

My recent rpis is the last 100 or so cd's i've purchased and ripped
the mp3 ?-? are all cds that I've had for a while .. and have added to my database/list
the newmp3s are albums which I haven't added to the database/list yet

*** NOTE ***
Many of my mp3s are my own personal rips. However, I do have several thousand that are not. I do not listen to any mainstream bands and most of the music I have is bands who are on indipendant labels. In fact many of these bands support mp3. I also regurlaly buy cds and I think it is important to support the artists. So to all the anti piracy folks, stay off my back.

\artist\album\## artist - title.mp3
With a lot of them and genres, you can get mixed up easily. If you use the id3s, you can retroactively go through them with various programs--including Explorer in XP--and it will be a good habit to have playlists saved here and there.
BTW, how does the directory structure get you running out of space? Wasn't that one of the reasons we abondoned FAT?

i use \mp3\artist-album\artist-title.mp3, but I only have 6.3 GB so I dunno what I would do if I had a lot more than that.

For full albums/individual songs:
X:\Music\Artist\Album\Artist - Album - Track No - Track Name.ogg

For compilations/various artists:
X:\Music\Album\Album - Track No - Track Artist - Track No.ogg

Bingo, except I have a whole MP3 partition, so

X:\Artist\Album

if the artist has more than one track, If I only have on track for that artist, they go in the root.

If i have more then one song from the artist but no album, i'll just put them in X:\Artist
