Oriental

I would like the Asian population to chime in here on this one. I never use this word, but I have heard others use it while describing "Oriental food" or "Oriental clothing." I just recently found out that most Asians consider this word insulting. I was under the impression it was the same as using the word Hispanic.

Do you take offense when someone uses this word in a non derogatory manner to describe something that is Asain?

Asians just crow in the corner and keep quiet. Don't worry, use it at will. No one will do anything nor care. Well, white people might get offended and/or feel uncomfortable. Be careful of use around white people.

Asians just seem less interested in racial things in general than blacks or hispanics do from my experience. You don't see their version of Al Sharpton going all crazy to free some guilty Asians.

This kind of stuff is all so arbitrary and based on culture, it's pretty silly to get worked up over it.

For example, using oriental to refer to east Asians in the US is kind of a no-no, but it's a pretty normal and accepted term in the UK I think. Spaz is fine in the US, but extremely offensive in the UK. etc. So what's offensive to one person may not be to another.

not really, i've heard of why some find it offensive, but doesn't really bother me as long as not used in a derogatory fashion. hell if cantonese people can call foreigners gwai lo, i'm fine with oriental.

I thought it was interesting that negro was an option on the census. I thought negro was considered offensive.

What's wrong with saying oriental? It's just grouping a specific portion of Asia.

It's the same like anyone calling people hick or hillbilly. If we said "white food" (if there is such a creation other than twinkies) then its too broad. If we said "hick food" it'd make more sense.

Potatoes.

I think its the fact that people that frequently use "oriental" uses it in a negative context. You have to be an idiot not to sense some kind of hostility from people that use the term as such.

As an Asian, I do not take offense. It's more of an obsolete term to me much along the lines of calling someone a Negro than Hispanic.

The reason some people consider the term offensive, I think, is because it carries with it generalizations, as opposed to simply a skin color descriptor.
Someone who is Japanese might take offense if they do not appreciate themselves or their cultures grouped together with Koreans for example, or whatever other eastern Asian group.

Similarly, if you were an American who lived in Japan and people referred to you as an "Occident", you may find that you would be offended, because you identify with being American, not just what the word Occident means, which include Europeans and other countries. If someone generalized you to be an "Occident", you may feel your uniquely American identifiers are overlooked and disrespected (like individuality, capitalism, English language or whatever).

Personally, if someone uses the word Oriental when referring to a person, then I assume two things:

1) Lower level of education or mastery of language
2) Less intelligent or lower cultural enrichment

Either way, I don't think people using the word mean to use it derogatorily. If they did, it would be the context that determine it.

There are two reasons why oriental is considered offensive:
1. It implies a Euro-centric view of the world
2. It was used at a time when Asians weren't treated well

I think it's silly that it's considered offensive. I think it's stupid that we use the word "Asian" when there are several different broad groups of people who live in Asia.
