Meh, I'll stick with whatever is the cheapest. I eat way to much food to buy pricey items.

Organic food tastes positively terrible, costs way too much, and I couldn't care less about pesticides that hurt pests, not me.

But hey - let the hippies feed the economy. Less money they'll waste on drugs and Phish tickets.

I haven't looked at the prices in a long time since I won't bother to buy, but I remember seeing individually packaged organic bananas for $1.25 each. You can buy 3 POUNDS of regular bananas for that much! WTF!

i part time at a grocery store (in the produce dept. no less) regular bananas are .60 and orgainc bananas are .80, most of the rest of the organic stuff has a similar markup.

Obviously the individual packaging attributed to the higher cost (I still don't even understand why they did that), but it's nice to see the markup is only 33% in this case.

Either way, still not worth it. And your grocery store charges too much for either type of bananas as it is :p

Pardon? The majority of the organic items I have tried taste much better than their inorganic (that doesn't sound right) counterparts.

The pesticides in a banana stay in the peel, which you (presumably) don't eat. So bananas are a bad example if you're just concerned about eating pesticides or whatever. (Some people say organic bananas taste better though. *shrug*)

So they compared it only on nutritional value? What about taste or other chemicals found?

That's what I'm wondering. No one I know buys organic food for increased nutritional value, but for better taste and no pesticides.

yup. never had anything to do with nutrition...so what's the point of study?
I think it serves the same function as that two year, 10 million dollar study to confirm coffee gives you a boost in the morning.

Taste is subjective. More people might even agree with you. Doesn't change the fact that I very much prefer regular food over their organic counterparts.

They taste the same and you should always rinse fruit/veggies before eating anyway.

No, organic varieties taste better (not always, of course), and rinsing doesn't remove all the chemicals.

I sure as hell can't taste the difference. Not worth the 100 to 300% mark up. And I doubt there's enough chemicals to worry about.

You're shopping at the wrong places. I won't pay more than a 10% premium for organic, but most of the fruits and veggies I eat are organic...

Gotta love the fear mongering.

Show me one valid study that shows people who eat "organic" foods live longer or are healthier than people who eat the same diet but non-organic.

Oops!

but organic food is VERY OFTEN way tastier than their non-organic counterparts

not because of the organic nature of the fruit/veg, but because the people who grow organic shit give a fuck.

just goes to show that one man's definition of a common word, such as "regular," can be subjective as well.

Odd.

Odd.

Not unlike the usage of the word "organic" itself. If I eat a "non organic" banana, I'm pretty damn sure that banana is composed of organic materials. Yes, I understand the origin of the term in this context, but the fact still remains that I sure as hell still eat truly organic food.

Regardless of whether it kills you or not, it is a form of poison. That is after all its actual intent... to kill pests.

yes indeed. I mentioned this earlier in the thread that organic when used with food was nebulous from the beginning, and has become even more so these days.

any purist will tell you that it's organic as long as it has carbon in it. ;)

This has been disproven time and again. You're shopping at the wrong stores.

And while there may not be enough chemicals in a single serving, add that up over the course of a few years of meals. Yeah - some chemicals you ingest your body accumulates.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the article, but when it says "no nutritional or health benefits", I thought that meant whatever chemicals are present don't affect my health, accumulated or not.

Everything is a poison, given the right dose.

It's all baseless fearmongering until valid studies show the same exact diet of organic vs non-organic foods offers differing results in lifespans and health.

So far, no such valid studies exists.

And isn't it funny how lifespans and health have only improved dramatically in the time frame that modern, effective farming techniques came about and continues to improve today?

No masters here, except logic. If anything, the people running to "organic" foods for health reasons are slaves to their own irrational fears.
