Girlfriend and I were heading down the 5 at the speed of traffic. She wasn't being reckless or anything of that sort. We pulled off to get gas and out of no where we see lights flashing behind us. Oregon's finest steps up to the car and asks my girlfriend, "so what's the big hurry?" She said she needed to use the restroom.

Trooper then says he had been following us for 13 miles and starts going through a laundry list of absolute bullshit....not using a blinker when passing (she forgot to once), following too closely (complete lie, it was raining so she always kept a good distance), and speeding (we were only over by about 8-10 mph...like everyone else).

He said that her driving was reckless. I then said that if she was driving so recklessly, why the fuck did you wait 13 miles to pull us over? I think the asshole was only trying to wrack up charges. We don't live in Oregon, so of course he knows that we won't be coming back to court to fight it. In the end he gave 3 citations totaling $860 D:

You can just not pay for it. They can't do anything to you since you don't live in Oregon. Just make sure when you come back to the state, your GF is no longer driving. :)

So your GF was exceeding the speed limit by 10mph in the rain and you feel she bears no responsibility? What a load of crap. She did speed, she did change lanes without signaling and those are only the offenses you admit to. There were probably others. If she had been driving the speed limit there would have been no trouble and likely if she signaled before changing lanes she would not have stood out enough to attract attention. Thinking cops are out to get you is childish and pathetic. If you think troopers are dicks don't give them anything to pull you over for. Simple enough, you fail to comprehend it and your GF failed to follow it. Pay the ticket and learn how to drive.

Or.... you can just pay it, but pay $.01 MORE than you owe. The state will generate a check to you for the $.01 extra you paid. DO NOT CASH IT. Tear it up. They will send you more. Tear those up too. Eventually, they will stop sending you the checks for $.01.

The reason not to cash the check after you overpay is the system cannot close your account and as such, they cannot contact your state to indicate you have points in another state, which nowadays means points on your record in your state. Therefore, because they can't close your account, they never report the points.

I found this advice on another forum so I can't say if it actually works but it's just an extra 1 cent.:)

I suspect CA plates - they hate Californians and blame us for ruining their great state!

Umm, sounds like he was NOT a dick but you guys were seriously foolish. 10 over the limit in the rain is a bad idea, most people dont know how to drive properly on a wet road at all. Even 5 under the limit is usually too much for the average person.

I had issues out of state with oregon cops too. I was in town on business, and headed out towards the coast. I was driving over the mountain doing around 50mph in a rental car. Cop saw me (he was driving the opposite way, and pulled a super dangerous 180 degree turn in the middle of the road and pulled me over. He had a field day when he saw i was out of state. Claimed i was doing 80 in a 50 but he would write it down to 50. I was driving a rental crown vic that was struggling to get past 50 up the mountain. They refused to let me fight the ticket by mail so I was out $200+

I can't STAND people who change lanes without signaling (sorry, it's one of my biggest peeves).

Signal EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Yes, just like the Highway Patrol/State Police in every state, Oregon Highway Patrol officers can be dicks...especially when you are driving stupidly.
Tell your girlfriend to learn how to drive properly in inclement weather, and MAYBE she'll avoid such tickets.

Never drive over the speed-limit on I-5 in Oregon, it is that simple. Also: remember that speed limits in Oregon are insanely slow for highways. The state has a lot of 45-55 mph roads that would be 70 in Washington or California.

Drive 5 under through Salem, I have heard so many nightmare stories of getting pulled over by Salem.
