Ordering this system on Friday

Spend the extra $20 or so and get the CO version of the EVGA card IMO. It comes out of the box overclocked and with a better hs.

Consider an opteron 170 processor.

i would suggest the x2 over the opteron, but am curious as to why the opteron would be recommened over the x2

same suggetion on the video card, i have the oc, and its worth the extra $$$'s

I didn't choose the Opteron because I can't spend much more than $300 on the processor, I still need a copy of windows. Also I'm not going to be overclocking any time soon because im a noob. That is why I'm tempted to get the 4000+ @ 2.4. I'll be coming from a P4 2.53 so I'm sure the x2 3800+ will blow it away too.

All I'll be using the computer for is gaming and photoshop. What do you think, 4000+ or x2 3800+?

At stock speeds the 4000+ will be quite a bit faster in games, except in the very few games that are multi-threaded. But the x2 3800+ will be much better at multi-tasking and video encoding. Which is more important to you?

If you are not OC'ing, isn't the Value Select memory a better choice? Also, photoshop may be able to make use of the dual core cpu.

Many gamers do go into windowed mode while their playing games to browse or search for something, and imo having x2 for that would help considerably.

As far as gaming, does the 4000+ out perform the x2 3800+ by a significant margin?
Is the x2 3800+ coupled with a 7800gt fast enough to run all the latest games like fear? A year from now will it be better to own an x2 3800+ rather than the 4000+? The other thing that worries me about dual core is I've read people saying they have to shut off one of the cores to play certain games.

Don't worry about cpu performance in games, worry about GPU performance. In fact, if I were you, I'd downgrade the cpu and get the 7800 GTX. You'll see better gaming performance that way. When considering gaming, put as much emphasis as possible into the video card, then leave the rest for cpu. I have a Pentium 630 running with a GTX, and couldn't be happier.

For games, a system with a 7800 GTX and an A64 3200 will outperform a system with a 7800 GT and an A64 4000.

I recommended the optetron over the X2 3800 because of the Cache 512 on the X2 1mb on optetron and is less that $100 more for the optetron but you could also get the Optetron 165 for about the same price as the X2 3800 but the CPU is a little slower only 1.8

The Opteron has the extra L2 cache and overclocks much higher than the X2 on stock voltages with stock hsf. It's just overall a better processor. If you cannot afford one however, then an X2 is the next best thing. You're just not getting the bang for your buck you would with an opteron.

Sorry, I didn't click the link. Good choices overall, similar to my config, except I chose the A8N32 mobo for SLI when I need it on my 37" video monitor 😀

I'm not recommending the 165 because from my supplier, they've said that it has been discontinued by AMD. Others are saying its being slow shipped. Either way, the price is being hiked by companies trying to make more money.

bump

I'm going with the 4000+ and will go dual core in about a year. Any other comments? Is the hard drive and roms ok?

For gaming, it doesn't matter. Any AMD socket 939 proc is going to work fine. But for editing, go with the 3800+. It is significantly faster than the p4 (maybe 2x single core?)
