So just over $1200 for a new system. Not bad, I think! 🙂

Btw if I was set on overclocking I'd get the DFI LanParty Ultra-D board but I am more interested in a simple, stable system that's easy to set up. People said the Chaintech board is the right choice. Feel free to comment on this rig.

edit- I think you can view the wishlist here

Okay, how come? I'm still open to suggestions.

Oh hey I see that board has the nicer onboard audio over the cheesy AC97 the Chaintech has. Then again, the MSI costs about as much as the DFI LanParty...

i would have gone with a $250 x800xl. for $325 you might as well get a 6800gt. and why go with the ocz value with a chaintech board, thats not gonna be able to give it the voltage needed for a good overclock on that ram.

I'm not overclocking any RAM. I'm not expecting to overclock ANYTHING actually. And the reason for the quietly-cooled X800XL is because I want a reasonably quiet system and often the GPU cooling is one of the loudest components.

than dont get that ram get corsair value ram cas 2.5 best if ur not ocing check everyones comp who isnt ocing and u will see they have it.

That's still quite a bit for the video card... Yeah, like w00t said, you could shave off $20 on the RAM by getting the Corsair VS. The OCZ stuff is pretty good overclocking RAM, and since you're not overclocking, you won't need it.

yes, it can be good but you need a motherboard that will give you correct voltages which his cant.

i have a serious question.

I don't know much about building computers but i do know that my computer has a 380 watt PSU (antec, the one that comes with the sonata), and it runs 3 optical drives and 3 hard drives. I have never experienced any problems of any kind. So i'm wondering why do people need 500 watt PSU's if they aren't running servers or something? I have an older graphics card (9700 se). Do the new ones require a crapload of power or somethign?

Yes many of the newer GPU's are quite power hungry. But the main reason people use/need big PS's if for overclocking, when overclocking both CPU and GPU it puts quite a load on the PS.

Again, it costs more because it's not a generic spec X800XL. Notice it comes with a large HSF on it that is much quieter than a regular HSF setup. Yes of course you can get a regular spec X800XL for about $40 less.

And yes it's out of stock. It keeps going in and out of stock because people who want to run a quiet system but want the power of an X800XL are buying this one.

As for the power supply, I'd get the 430W Seasonic but the 500W and 600W ones are the only ones with the latest plugset with 24-pin PCI-E compatible, etc, so 500W it is. Oh and Seasonic because they're quieter.

Do I really need the Raptor? Okay, suggest another harddrive with around 80GB storage space (I don't need more for the OS & game installs drive as I have existing external enclosure with a larger HD for file storage and a DVD+-R drive) that will load the OS and game files (levels, textures, whatever) and move large files around nearly as quickly as the Raptor.

Trust me, I'd love to get it down to around $1100 or so, but the PSU and the GPU pretty much need to stay, but I would consider a different HD if anyone can list a reputable brand that meets the above requirements. =p

Uh okay wtf NewEgg?? Did they just remove that X800XL from their inventory?! I can't even find it now and they took it off my WishList too! 🙁
