Look for local farms.
I buy all my beef from a local farm that does grass feed with small amounts of grain to finish. All the cattle are born and raised on the farm. Lower risk of anything nasty.
Much better quality beef because the farmer is the direct salesman. He ages it himself and if it sucks then his business suffers more than if he was just selling at wholesale.
It has been some of the best beef I have ever had.
Bingo. If there is a local farmers market of any size there is usually a rancher there that sells their products (and if not, someone there will have a source).
I tried our market, the only rancher only wanted to sell in fractions of a cow.
It's worth the cost savings. Clean out your deep freeze and get a 1/4 or 1/2.
We used to get beef from the local 4-H. It's a damn good feeling knowing that you can have a damn fine steak whenever you want.
