Hi,

Im asking my brother, who lives in the US, to order some hardware for me on newegg.

He recommended that I don't order anything expensive because UPS and Fedex just drop the packet in front of his house and because he usually comes home late from work somebody could steal it in the meantime :(

What delivery method do you choose when ordering expensive hardware?

Thank you!!

you have to sign a release waiver for ups and/or fedex to just "drop an item" in front of your house. my neighborhood is very safe so we signed the waiver. I've had $300-$400 items many many times on my front porch sitting for hours until I get home. If his neighborhood is not safe then he shouldn't have signed the release ;)

FWIW my Newegg UPS orders are left at the front door of my home, and I've never signed any release waiver. On the other hand Fed-Ex typically requires me to sign for the package. As a result ymmv.

Same here no waiver , UPS just knocks and sets it down on the porch(even if I am there, they don't wait for anyone to come to the door). Not for sure on Fedex.

if you live in a safe neighborhood they can leave it but it's up to the driver. the reason we signed the waiver is that one time we had a $700 epson photo printer delivered and they wouldn't leave it without the signature. that would have been ok but she needed it asap, so they offered up the release form. iirc we could have at that time instead have required a signature for all items.

Is there some way to arrange it that you simply pick it up somewhere using UPS/Fedex/DHL/anybody else?

Once you get a tracking number you can call FedEx/UPS to hold the item and pick it up at the local branch. Keep in mind, what you have in mind for "local" may be very different than theirs. There may even be an option to do this online.

Otherwise just leave a note (on your door or near the mailslots where they usually drop packages) saying you don't want them to leave the package and that you will pick it up from their local depot/branch. The thing is with this option, you have to wait til the trucks get back to the depot, which typically leaves you a 2-3 hour window to pick up your package.

All things shipped by ground will be left at the door from my experience. The two day and overnight services require a signature. Does you brother have a work address it can be delivered to? Otherwise do like the other said and call the shipper and have it be left at the station. Since you aren't in the States waiting an extra day shouldn't be a problem.

I moved in to a brand new house... it was an EMPTY field before it was built... UPS did not deliver a package twice when I wasn't there... both times I checked the "DO NOT LEAVE IT OUTSIDE" Box and set the marker out...

Third time they put the box outside with a note saying "we have your signature on file" and have been doing so since...

That being said. I have NEVER had anyone take the UPS delivery items left on my porch... And have been ordering about 5000$ worth of merch a year online for 5 years... living in 3 houses over that time period.
