Why would you do that when SBC and Verizon both offer it for $29.95 for >6 months?

It's no different ordering it at BB than calling the 800 number yourself and ordering it, except that the BB guy gets commission off of it. (At Staples at least, that's how it worked with the MSN thing)

According to the Verizon representative I spoke to on Tuesday, the $29.95/month service will continue on past 6 months if you subscribe to their long distance plan.

Good question.

I would get the Verizon for $35/mo but neither of those plans are available in my area.

True, but otherwise it's $34.95 if you don't order the Freedom package. Hell of a lot better than the $49.95 after 6 months. That's pretty much a ripoff imho. I think you also get the first month of DSL service free if you order the DSL alone

Ross - that sucks. Is SBC available in your area? Whose your local provider?

I remember Best Buy giving away giftcards if you signed up for broadband in the store...

I only have 3 choices for broadband:

Comcast cable which is $53/mo after 6 month promo, no cable outlet close to our network and trust me routing a cable near it ... is not easy nor comestic.

Earthlink DSL

DirecWAY

That's it.

I wish.

Then I'd get a job at Radio Shack, get the sweet Sprint PCS deals where you pay like $5/mo for 1500 per mo minutes.

Then work for Brookstone and buy a Tempurpedic $2,000 latex mattress for like $700.

Who is the provider for the Earthlink DSL? Is it Covad? You may be able to go directly with Covad (www.covad.net) and save some money ... Covad isn't always cheaper though. I had Cox HSI (cablemodem) and they are horrible compared to Covad DSL (what I have now). The Covad DSL is great, I love it. No outages so far, and I always get the advertised speed. Plus they don't cap your monthly downloads and uploads (at least not yet) like Cox does.

I hope it's not Covad, I thought Earthlink DSL provides their own bandwidth?

Well, DSL isn't that good, its about $28 a month...

Since when did Earthlink become its own CLEC? I thought Earthlink always bought its service from someone else (usually Covad or the local ILEC)?

Here is a link from DSLReports.com, they show a list of some of the various lines that Earthlink resells, notice the majority of them are from Covad:

They do also sell local ILEC lines as well.

Rossman,

I'd goto dslreports.com if you haven't already and checkout the Earthlink forum, you can ask around about whether the service is good or not from people who actually have it.

I don't know why you dont want Covad service. Covad is the largest CLEC provider and will most likely not be going anywhere because it has backing from some major ISPs namely AT&T, Earthlink, Speakeasy (smaller ISP, but sucessful in its own right). They're in my opinion one of the best DSL providers available, they charge a little more money than the others but its because their employees (not the CSRs, the people who manage the network), are more qualified and thus better paid (at least thats my understanding from some of the stories I've heard about Verizon DSL service and some of the "oops" mistakes their techs have made versus Covad techs).

Damn, @ $30 I would save $15 over Optimum Online. However with OOL I get around 7 to 8 MBit down and nearly 1 Mbit up. I think it is worth the extra $15

Here's how my Earthlink DSL is configured.

CLEC - Covad
ISP - Earthlink
Telco - Ameritech

With Covad I get a higher upload speed of 384 kbps vs. what Eathlink provides 128 kbps.

If you have Optimum Online, consider yourself lucky, they are one of the best cable providers in the nation. The $15 is definitely worthwhile in my opinion! If I moved back to NJ, I would seriously consider buying in a neighborhood that had Optimum online just so I could have all of that bandwidth!!!! ;)

BTW- I pay $70/month for 1.5Mbps/384Kbps ... Expensive? Yes. But Cox HSI was $55/month and they capped the amount of data I could xfer per month and per day, and they had really awful service. (Outages often, inconsistent speeds, completely incompetant CSRs that would lie to you to get you off the phone!). For the extra $15/month I'd rather get a little better upstream and more reliable service.

PS- SKORPI0, you're lucky to have the Earthlink 1.5/384 package still, all new Earthlink customers even through Covad only get 1.5/128, Earthlink stopped the 1.5/384 package for $50/month awhile back but grandfathered in everyone who already had it.

the sbc service is only 768/128. and in my area apparently i cant even get that, i've got a note on my account that limits me to 384 down because i live so far away from the switch.

What does Earthlink cable give you?

I'm interested in the $30/mo. for 6 mos. (and $42 thereafter) but I don't really want to give up my RCN 1500/768 (approx.) bandwidth.

Well I don't think I'll be signing up for Earthlink DSL @ BB B&M since I think the $75 BB GC is via mail in rebate, not instant.

Oooh the irony of a guy turning down a MIR who has a link to "rebate tracking software" in his signature ;)

:D Good things always come to those who wait - more options are bound to appear in your area sooner or later
