from Newegg, of course :) Now I need to know what memory is best for this board. Most reviews have used the Corsair XMS 3200, is this the one to buy?? I have always been a Crucial fan, but they have yet to come out with DDR400 memory, since there is no JDEC standard.

Any suggestions???

I am running 2 512meg Corsair XMS 3200s' (the matched set) on my SINXP1394 and here is how my setup went. First off the auto timings in the BIOS for the Corsair XMS 3200LL were too aggressive. I couldn't even get to the BIOS to change them. I finally tried to stick some old 2100 in and bingo, I was able to get into the BIOS and switch the timings to manual and set it to 2,6,3,3 not 2,6,2,2 like I wanted. I havn't tried to tweek the timings yet to see if I can lower any of them any more. If you go with 256 meg sticks you might have better luck with the timings. Then the duel power daughter card won't work (apparently nobody's does). I have the 2 Western Digital SE 120s' running raid 0 with 16k cluster size and to me it seams like installing games is slightly slower than a single drive, but reading from them is at least 25% faster than a single drive. Off the start with all stock settings my 3dmark score was 15,335. I then changed the fsb to 150mghz and reset the memory back to 400mghz and my 3dmark score was 16,265. Then I left the fsb at 150 and oc'd my Hercules 9700 pro to 344, 324 and my 3dmark is 16,717 (I couldn't oc the card at agp8x, had to change to agp4x). And thats where I'm at right now. The vcore is still set at stock so temp is always under 40c and so far is rock solid. Hope this helps.

Great info Poacher. :) Confused about the DPS not working though?? What exactly causes it not to work??

I think it has something to do with the way it seats in the mb. Some people have gotten thiers to work "intermitttently" by wiggling it. Also if you put the retainer clip over the card and you want to remove it, you will probably have to cut it with a pair of wire cutters.

I would go with TwinMos or Kingston for the RAM rather than the Corsair. They perform and overclock the same, if not better than the Corsair, for less funds.

Stupid me. I never even thought to check my BIOS verson. I just checked and I'm running F2 and there is a F4 out. I am going to flash mine and see if it fixes the memory problem. I'll let you know how it goes. By the way, my board is revision 1 which is A0 stepping, but I'm not running a 3 gig anyway so I don't need it.

Ditto everything Poacher said. I'm also setting up a GA-SINXP1394, and can atest to the problems with their dual power supply; I get a failure message everytime on the boot-up screen (even though it's clearly powered up; fans running, LEDs on). Dropped an e-mail to Gigabyte; we'll see if they respond...

Poacher, let us know how the BIOS flash to F4 works out. I was surprised to see that my board didn't come with the latest BIOS, and am holding out some hope that the revised BIOS might "fix" the DPVRM problem.

By the way, I've using two 512 Mb sticks of Crucial PC2700.

Well the flash went fine, but it didn't change the memory problems. I'll stick the DPVRM in tonight and see if it works.

Thanks for the update Poacher!

It was suggested to me over at Overclockers that I should try clearing the CMOS (which I did by removing the battery). It certainly cleared the CMOS, but it did not affect the DPVRM problem.

:(

Sorry to hear that... I haven't heard anything back from Gigabyte on my first e-mail. Let's start a new thread here in Motherboards when (if) we get a reply.

I really am wondering, however, if the problem is actually the message. Obviously if the DPVRM is actually working, I can live with an erroneous message. I wonder if there's any other way to verify its operation besides that boot-up message.

I'm in the same boat. I just ordered the 8SQ800 and I am looking for some memory. I was going to go all out and get the platinum Corsair Twinx (2x256, $180 for ddr400, or $158 for 333) but it seems like people are having trouble with the timings. I like the idea of the matched set though.

Should I just get the Kingston 2700 for $80 ($160 for the 400)? It's CL 2.5 as opposed to the Corsair (CL2) but from what people have said so far, it doesn't look like its worth the $$.

So here's what I'm looking at for 512mb:

Corsair Twinx ddr400CL2 for $180
Corsair Twinx ddr333CL2 for $158
Kingston ddr400CL2.5 for $160
Kingston ddr333CL2.5 for $80

I'm willing to get the Twinx400 if its going to work, I just don't want to waste the $$ needlessly.

Here's another thread about the same probelmo.

Any suggestions/input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am running the 1 gig twinx Corsair XMSLL on my 1394 and your right you can't get all the speed that that memory can produce, but close. I am running 2-3-2-6 @ 400mghz and all Corsair claims is 2-2-2-6. So you see it is still fast. The problem is, is you have to have some slower memory around to stick in so you can get into the BIOS and change the timings from "auto" to 2-3-2-6 so it will boot. Which ever brand you pick I would say go with 3200. Just for the added bandwidth.

Pretty much. If you use memory that will be auto set to 2-2-2-6 @400 mghz you can't get into the BIOS to change it.

The memory I got is 2-3-3-6 T1 @ 400Mhz, will this work, or am I going to have problems??
