Placed an order from Newegg Marketplace to a seller that has a poor rating yesterday. I didn't notice the rating until today when I checked my order status. Should I take the wait and see approach, or cancel the order and go with a more reliable seller? It's an xmas gift for my wife, so I have some time, but the poor ratings have me a little spooked.

Depends. What is the poor rating about? Companies are bad in different ways. Some rack up their negatives with slow shipping, others have good delivery records and only drop the ball on CS when there is a problem. If they get the smacks for either of those, wait it out, you're probably fine. If the negatives are for obvious scams like selling counterfeits items or trying to pass off used or refurbs as new then cancel.

Yea it didn't dawn on me to check the seller. I figured if it's got Newegg's name backing it, I should be getting Newegg's type of great service but apparently that's not the case with Marketplace. We'll see. There's only 3 reviews and none are positive, 1 with slow shipping, 1 with wrong product shipped and slow shipping, and 1 with poor packaging and possibly used product. What's worse is I don't see a cancel option on my order details now...

Yeah, I thought the same thing the first time I used NewEgg's Marketplace. Big mistake. That place is shadier than Amazon's marketplace and Ebay combined. NewEgg is in bed with some really bad vendors and if something goes wrong they won't help.

Your only hope is to double down and order a second item from that seller. One is bound to go through!!
(Like an airline that overbooks.)

One of the many reasons I basically never use them anymore.

I don't understand why every F'ing website needs/wants their own marketplace. Amazon's causes enough problems, and they do it better than any of the other ones.

You don't? Let me explain it to you: $$$$$$$$$

It's free money. They take a cut on every sale and do almost no work. That's why Amazon and NewEgg don't care if their marketplaces are filled with scumbags. It doesn't matter if some people get ripped off as long as the commissions keep flowing in.

Yeah, I get that part of it. But it also completely undermines their real business. It also pollutes their websites with a bunch of low quality and duplicate listings. And most people will blame the marketplace provider when they get junk.

Yeah, but the downside comes with a much larger upside. Every person brought to the portal by a 3rd party vendor is going to be served up lots and lots and lots of listings for items on the parent site. Come for a cheap Chinese case for your iPhone, pick up a new memory card and a couple of books while you're there. The portal site picks up more new customers shopping 3rd party vendors than they lose by customers being ripped off by 3rd party vendors. They get the commissions and they get more new customers than they lose. It's win-win.

Well the seller cancelled my order so I'm happy. Lesson learned to review everything more even if there's a major retailer attached.
