Hey All,

I just got my brand new Asus EAH4850 Top 512MB video card from NewEgg. I got it installed and when I looked at the specs in CCC, it tells me that I have 1,024MB of "HyperMemory."

All the markings on the box say that it is a 512MB card, including the description on the Serial No. sticker.

Is there any way to figure out exactly what I have?

(I ran 3DMark06 and got a 138% increase over my old X1950XTX.)

Thanks SSChevy. It looks like I've just got the plain old 512MB version. Oh well. In most of the resolutions I play at, I wouldn't see much difference between one or the other.

My new 4670 does this too - 512MB card and CCC claims 1024MB Hypermemory. Kind of makes me curious. . . I know Hypermemory is associated with RAM-stealing low-end X300 type cards, and it'd never occurred to me that they might use the same thing on a higher-end card. I guess it could actually work in a useful way, but half of me still wants to yell "Oi, give my RAM back, I didn't say you could do that." Never mind, I just shoved in an extra gig of RAM and forgot about it.

probably a good thing for all of us who are buying 4-8gb machines because ram is so damn cheap these days. if it doesnt hurt performance, why not eh?

Thanks for the information, guys. I thought it was a marketing term. I didn't even think to look it up.

I really don't see any point in using Hypermemory, apart from the fact that I don't really NEED more VRAM (512MB GDDR2, 1280x1024 max gaming res and my VPU can't really handle the newest games maxed at that res) you have the problem that system RAM runs far slower than, for example GDDR3. If I bought an HD4870 for ultra-high res gaming (the 4850 isn't meant for that), I would have opted for the 1GB version in the first place. Why shell out R3500 for a card and then use system RAM to help it out of a bottleneck?
