Man, I wish I could get cable. I just moved to a new apartment and I can only get DSL here. I used to have cable internet in my old apartment and it was great, rarely an outage after it switched to ATTBI network... Well I signed up for DirectTVDSL with 6 month at $40, $50 rebate and $50 afterwards. Self-install, free hardware... and I live close to a remote terminal.
While speakeasy ratings have been great according to DSL reports, they are simply to expensive to try out. Remember, you get $150 Geforce card for paying $15-$50 more A MONTH. this becomes less than a deal in 6 month.....

Im using alltel DSL where I live. 1.5Mb/256kb. Installation was free. I paid nothing for the router/modem. $49.99 mo. And they are the only high speed connection around.

It seems high for the speakeasy program, but if the reliability and CS is there, hey...go for it.

Im going to have to stick with Dial up for awhile too, Ameritech offers DSL around here but their equipment charge is ridiculous.... you end up getting a rebgate for most of it, but screw rebates..

speakeasy always gets great ratings..however their prices are outrageous.

I currently use Verizon DSL and have NEVER had a problem. I get 1.5/384 for $79/month. WAY cheaper than speakeasy.

<< would the speakeasy 384/384 SDSL package be good enough for 2 people to play games on the internet at the same time? I have AT&T cable 1200/384 and the service has been awful, whenever 2 of us are playing at the same time, pings jump to 1000. im in boston. >>

Yes, you could easily put two players on. I use to play with 3 people on my 128k isdn and it was great. I'd imagine the 384k SDSL would probably support 4-5 people and still maintain a good ping.

I'm on my second ADSL supplier, earthlink, and mostly will kick that company to the curb when my contract expire this fall. Sending me email responses that 256 kps or above download speed is good enough - sucks.

What I have read about SDSL is that the benefits come from using dry copper. In other words, a new seperate line is pulled into your dwelling and a jack installed somewhere. Labor rate for any Telco's service ain't cheap and probably Speakeasy customer service expensives are on the high side.

IMHO, there are two real reasons to spend above $50 for broadband, which seems to be the average price. One is that you're a SOHO and your business requires fast upload speed. The other is that one is a gamer with a need for fast ping times and good upload/download speeds.

Just to add. I don't know if they still do it or not but when i got my account they were still offering the SLA's. So yes, you do get what you pay for. Given they don't really need to offer SLA's given their uptime record it's still nice to know it's there.

Static IP's and the ability to run your own server (from ftp - dns - http - smtp - https, etc) are also an added bonus! Other ISP's block pretty much all these ports.
