My friend got a motherboard from Newegg... It was DOA. Of course Newegg took it back just fine, but it was a huge PITA, considering my friend was awfully excited about getting his new system built. (I believe that they don't even test them.)

The prices they have are very tempting... But I force myself to pass.

Does that include refub?

yup. as a matter of fact... i would say about 90% of my newegg purchases are refurb. knock on wood... i have not sent one back yet. this includes 4 x ecs k7s5a, 2 x epox 8k7a, 1 x 300w sparkle psu, 1 x 40x cdrw, and a few other misc motherboards.

I've ordered an Abit IT7 refurbished from Newegg and it was (and still is) in great condition. I was very suprised to see that it was in the original box with all included accessories (manual, 2x ATA100 cable, floppy cable, P4 heatsink adapter, driver CD, etc.), and everything was in great condition.

I got a refurbished Tyan Tiger MP on Newegg. No problems.

Now all I need is a refurbished Xeon board with HT, AGP, PCI-X, and on-board SCSI.

Oh yeah....

i dont care about the cables or manuals. They mean nothing to me really since i already got scraps around. Im using the stuff in this pc for the new mobo. This mobo is going somewhere its not even 1 year old, but needs so much power it makes me sick.

Just because it says refurb does not mean it was broken and then fixed. US laws do not allow retailers to resell as NEW any product that was previously owned. This means that a customer might order a hard drive, get's it home, takes it out of the packaging but decides not to install it. They return the hard drive for a refund, but because the product has already been sold once and its box opened the product cannot be sold as new again. Mostly places either call merchandise of this sort "Open Box", "Clearance", "Refurb", "Slightly Used", or any other similar term.

More than likely most of the stuff that isn't broken Newegg gets back turns around and resells it as Refurb. I can't imagine Newegg fixing electronics or sending them off to get them fixed. They may send them back to the manufacturer who more than likely just sends new parts as replacement and scraps the broken pieces or uses them for their own purposes (testing & parts).

Newegg is a great company. I buy all my new stuff there.
Having said that, I'm a perfect 0 and 3 on the referbs. 2 vid cards and 1 MB, all DOA.
All returned without issue but at a loss of shipping.
Some have had good luck with there referbs, but I cannot say the same for myself.

Running a refurb'd ASUS from Newegg right now and it's been rock solid since day one. All I got was the board and a generic white box. Not a problem though because the price was exceptional and I have plenty of cables and parts. I usually get the latest docs and drivers from the board's web site anyway so I could care less about the lack of software.

I don't have a problem with refurb'd items as a rule but it depends on the item. However, I would not recommend them to everybody because some users may need more *help* than others when piecing a system together.
