Charlie via tweets and forum posts has implied that there is some new feature or features in Kepler that he hasn't disclosed yet, and presumably Nvidia will highlight that feature/those features to game devs and hardware reviewers.

AMD's high end is only 30% faster than the old 580. If a new Kepler mid-level car is 20-30% faster than the old 580, it could be on-par. That card for $300 would be awesome, and hopefully the high-end is REALLy fast.

It would be win/win for EVERYONE if NV does this. The 7950 and 7970s would drop in price and everyone could get a really solid card for $300 and a premium for more. Only AMD shills hope Kepler is a dud.

All I can say is this - 7970 performance for 300 bucks in the next few months - I'll believe it when I see it. Until then, it's all just rumors with a heaping side of hot steamy BS.

Really Balla? CivV is the most pro-NV game out there (mainly due to AMD's driver lack IIRC).

Are we shocked that official AMD / pro-AMD sites/posters will use settings and games favorable to their point of view, and Nvidia will do the same?

I, for one, am eagerly waiting for Nvidia's newest releases in hopes that prices come down, at which point I'll buy whatever meets my needs at the price point I am willing to buy at.

Doesn't matter, the point wasn't the performance but the fact that nothing from the leaks matched up.

It's pro Nvidia because Civ V is the first and only game to have multi-threaded rendering (a feature of DX11) while Nvidia is the only gpu maker at this time supporting it on the driver level.

The point wasn't the performance of the 7970 vs the 580, it would be a pretty blatant "fanboy" move of me if that was the case. Civ V was used because it is a 1.6x or 60% faster game in the pre release hype, which turned out to be a total farce. None of the other games will match up with the chart, however Civ V compared to the chart of a "rumor" shows some of the biggest disparity... Which was the reason it was used instead of the other choices (limited to Anand's review).

If the $300 part easily beats the 7970 I would eat my hat. That would imply that the performance of this new Kepler part would be at least 20% better than the 580, probably closer to 30% or more. NVidia is in business to make money, not to reward loyal users. If AMD is moving 7970s @ $550 and this new card easily beats it, they might decide to undercut AMD at $500 in order to make the choice obvious, but they are not going to leave $200 sitting on the table. The board would have the executives skewered if they did.

It's just rumors...

I don't remember anyone caring about the 7970 performance rumors stifling 580 sales.

I remember gems like these:

So, you picked the most nVidia-biased game on the market to show how much faster the 7970 is compared to the 580?

Really? BF3 and Dragon Age 2 are AMD GE games and the 7970 barely outperforms 580 there too. Dirt2 is another AMD game and 7970 perform worse than the 580 there. Its funny how people blame stuff like TWIMTBP, drivers, multi-threading, command list, blah blah when the end result is all that matters.

That chart is more in-line when comparing a 580 to an O/Ced 7970 and at 1920x1080.
Not a fair comparison, but still the chart is close to the truth in a specific scenario.

You need to understand the difference between "up to" and "average"

He just pointed out that Civ in the first graph shows a 60%boost which isn't the case when it was released. (the first graph is also fake as hell but it does give a way in how hyped up things get)

Perhaps you're confusing the header with the actual performance increases of each game? I mean that's how I'd read a graph like that, but if that is incorrect and the 7970 has a 60% increase in min or max consider me schooled.

Or perhaps that meant a single individual frame looking due west, at coords 34.2S 83.9E with a frontal elevation of 230 degrees, at 12:36am, during the lunar eclipse?

:D

Unrelated to this post, but it reminded me of the arguing of involving Civ5 in a benchmark suite - found it funny that the reviewer agreed with MrK6 on the subject that was being discussed:

Because of the fact that Civilization V uses driver command lists, we were originally not going to include it in this benchmark suite as a gaming benchmark. If it were solely a DCL test it would do a good job highlighting the fact that AMD doesn’t currently support the feature, but a poor job of actually explaining any hardware/architectural differences. It was only after we saw AMD’s reviewer’s guide that we decided to go ahead and include it, because quite frankly we didn’t believe the numbers AMD had published.
They aren't going to include Civ5 (knowing the huge discrepancy) until AMD requested it in the reviwer's guide. Interesting.

Actually, in xbitlabs review the hd 7970 was 56% than the gtx 580 in Civ 5 (2580x1600). At 1920x1080 it was 54% faster. Pretty close to 1.6, so at least one site got close to what AMD touted. Just shows there can be a pretty big variance in benchmarks even in the same game between various sites.

The wonderful thing about the scientific method is that it's always right

lol yeah, it also seems the 6970 is faster than the 580 in the Civ V tests as well (at least on that site).

Maybe they used a older nvidia driver that didn't support multithreaded rendering?

I have no doubt that Nvidia's offering will be faster than the 7970, but I also have no doubt that AMD's offering can be priced substantially lower and still be profitable. Ultimately the money is at the price/performance level. Top end cards just win you awards.

/wishes I could afford $500 cards~
