Why not just do it anyway? A smarter populace can contribute more to the economy too.

Trump and his "I love the uneducated" way of getting what he wants by exploiting those folks is anathema to having a smarter populace. Trump and his oligarchs want to reserve education for their own kids to carry on the rule of the rich over the rule of law that we're all supposed to live by.

They want a dumbed down population that's so much easier to keep in their place and not present a threat to the aristocrat class. The very wealthy of the nation have already been at this game of class war via suppressing the ability of the middle class to acquire the power of self-determination via making it very difficult for the peasant class to afford to get a degree in medicine, law, the sciences, politics etc.

It's one reason why the laws of the land make it very easy for the wealthy to have their children avoid the draft if there's ever the need to go there again. They make the rules of the game (our laws) to fit their own wants and needs.
