I think for a lot of the bad stuff Trump is doing the groundwork was laid by his predecessors. Not just Bush Jr but also Obama, who failed to close Guantanamo. Once you had the precedent established of offshore prison camps to avoid awkward legal constraints that dealing with things domestically would involve, you opened the door for Trump potentially shipping off _anyone_ he doesn't like to such camps. There's a lot of continuity in Trumpism with long-standing US behaviour.
Congress made it very difficult to close gitmo. I put most of the blame there since they passed a law forbidding trying detainees in US courts.

The reason Obama didn't close Guantanamo is that Congress passed a law forbidding him from doing it and he followed the law.

OK, fair enough, I shouldn't blame Obama personally. Still would maintain that Trump is making use of potential tools of tyranny that predated him.

Diaper Don commenting on Petey

"He's doing a great job — ask the Houthis how he's doing," Trump said.

Holy shit Trump gives new meaning to doubling down, my definition of great job would be, um well not the same. Pete's actions have proven it would be near impossible to get fired from this cabinet. The fact he openingly has been sharing non public shit with his sister and brother in law and others. And not only did he not get fired, but his boss is starting publicly he's doing a "great job"

only in America.

That I completely agree with. It is the quintessential way presidential systems fail and collapse into despotism. Over time the executive usurps more and more legislative authority until the legislature is essentially irrelevant, as we're finding out now.

For quite a while the US has been held together by the basic idea that presidents wouldn't do things like this even though they could get away with them. Now we get to see what happens when we have one who doesn't care about that. If Trump isn't removed (and that is a TALL order) I see no way to return the US to a constitutional democracy in the near term at least. Also a strong chance of some sort of violence here.

Well, if you don't vote for anything controversial, and leave it up to the president voters won't come after you. It's the abdication of congress over the years that are to blame for the predicament we are in. I again will plead that the HOR representation be at a minimum doubled which will stop some of this madness.

Haven't they shot down a bunch of our drones and show no signs of slowing down?

Looks like Trump’s approval on immigration is starting to slip underwater.

View attachment 122534

In the same poll his econ polling is at 37% approve...before the worst aspects of the trade war have even shown up. Cost of living approve is at 31%.

Total dogshit numbers across the board really but these could both slip into the 20s when prices rise and choices disappear from store shelves. Once Americans decide the economy above all is their priority his general approval will sink down past his first term.

The moment I get the news that Trump died, I'm going to walk to my local bar here and buy everyone a round in celebration,

I have a bottle of whiskey I bought years ago that on the secondary market is now in the four digit range. Getting opened when I hear that mfer is no longer living.

Same concept, but not as expensive. Just a nice unopened bottle of scotch I inherited from grandparents stash when they passed away. I've had it now for ~15 years and I figure that they'd be more than happy that I saved it's virginity for that wonderful occasion.

Trump lost the last issue he was above water on, driven by a collapse in hispanic approval of his immigration policy (sending non-criminals to El Salvador gulag).

Surely this will lead to numerous front page stories about his fading mental capacity.

Right?
