Orange square of "thing" under heatsink

What are they?? I have some orangy stuff under my heatsink?? what are they........ coz i just strekth them out........
 
Um, the heatpad thingy?

Yea, if you plan on using some Arctic Silver or even some cheesy paste, go ahead and remove the heatpad because it gets all gummy and it doesn't conduct well. Scrape it clean with a credit card then rub some alcohol on it.
 
Just make sure to replace it with thermal compound. Don't just take it off and put the heatsink back on. It's there for a reason.
