Orange is the New Black: A Netflix Original Series

I just listened to a review of this one and both guys liked it. Seems like if you enjoyed Weeds, you will like this. Definitely will check out at some point.

I thought Season 1-3 Weeds was excellent and original. Season 4-8 ughhh, but I forced myself to finish it.

Pleasantly surprised at this one - trailer looks genuinely very good. I just don't have the time to get into ANY series now other than Walking Dead, but I will try and add this to my very short list of weekly watches.

I saw the trailer and got really interested. Will definitely be watching.

But it's going to take something very special to take down House of Cards.

In case I haven't been clear, I think House of Cards was THE best drama released last season. Homeland won the Emmy in 2012. House of Cards is an order of magnitude better.

For shame!

House was very well done, but Homeland was just damn good, way better than I thought. Probably the best series I've seen, definitely gobbled up the episodes at a faster rate than with house of cards.

I don't disagree with you, but I guess I'm thinking about HoC vs Season 2 of Homeland. Season 1 of Homeland was excellent, but Season 2 was nowhere near as good, IMO, and that's what HoC would be going up against for a 2013 Emmy.

On topic, has anyone managed to watch a OITNB episode yet? Won't be able to watch the first one until tonight, maybe.

Homeland season 1 was excellent. Season 2 ventured into season 4-8 of "24" territory with the outlandishness.

well shiz, didn't know that's what it was. I will have to check it out, then.

I'll admit, not much has been great from netflix so far. House of Cards is in its own world, but everything else has been mediocre to downright bad. Lillyhammer was poorly cast I think, the new Arrested Development is just trying to be Arrested Development (Still only on episode 9 or so--I find it to be a chore watching these), and Hemlock Grove is just....just...couldn't bother after 4 episodes. It's terrible.

Totally. I'm kind of even not really looking forward to Season 3. I just can't fathom how they're going to stretch this Brody out of the country thing.

pilot was boring. not sure if this show is supposed to be a comedy or drama.
It's a Dramedy.

The problem with AD is that each show is centered around one characted instead of having the awesome ensemble cast.

Not only that, but the TRT for season 4 of AD is 489 minutes. In 15 episodes. That's an average of 32 minutes and episode.

To put that in perspective, Season 1 of AD, with 22 episodes, has a TRT of 466 minutes, with an average of 21 minutes and episode.

So not only do you miss out on the excellent ensemble that throws in a lot of variety each episode, but the episodes themselves are longer, the total amount of time is longer and it really made the show suffer. In hindsight, focusing on one character at a time and only doing 15 episodes was a mistake. The story lines should have been interwoven more throughout and there probably should have been 20 episodes.

Hemlock Grove wasn't terrible, for what it was. But you're probably really not in the shows target demographic. My wife really liked it though. I'd say it's on par with all of the supernatural shows on the CW, if that gives you any indication.

the running time was the main thing I noticed about AD--being that it was no longer Network with ad-limited running times, there was far less need for editing, so you get a rather jumbled and dense mess of, well, fluff that would have been cut from the network program.

the character to character focus is also not doing it for me, or anyone that I have talked to about it.

The problem with Hemlock grove is the dialogue, the characters, and the plot that is organized around leading you on with vague references that are never really explained at all in any episode, and then in each episode just adds more backstory that everyone but the audience will and can understand.

I'm fine with werewolves and magic or whatever, but the writing is so goddamn atrocious it isn't worth my time. the narration from that freak giant girl, too...seriously. where is this stuff coming from? some random screwball exposition after another in every episode.

I thought much the same the first few episodes. I will say it got significantly better towards the end, and maybe that's why I think it was OK. I'd never watch it myself, but my wife likes to watch some of these things so I end up half watching them while doing other things.

I thought it picked up after the pilot.

I like the show, but tbh, the "central" white lady character is the least interesting thing on it, and I could deal entirely without that guy from American Pie and all that fucking soap making stuff.

Holy shit Kate Mulgrew has gotten large... I wonder if we can tell what season it is by her hairstyle again?

I noticed, though, that her legs are freakish tiny.

Watched 4 episodes--this show is pretty good so far. I actually like Jason Biggs in this for some reason. Though it seems that he remains typcast as the "masturbating character."

Watched a few episodes and doubt I'll watch more unless I'm really bored or something. Its not a good enough drama, and it certainly is not funny enough to get me to keep interested. I think that's the biggest issue, it just isn't that interesting, or maybe the stilted characters aren't, I don't know. It kinda gives me the same vibe as the new Arrested Development did that makes me not want to watch it. I think its that uncomfortable awkwardness that seems to permeate so many "comedy" shows now.
