At work we are going to be doing a lot of work in Oracle starting in a year.

Very generic statement by my boss basically.

I know I need to get more info on what this means. But what should I learn about to start? I know SQL and have dealt with Oracle databases before. But I know Oracle can get a lot more complicated with it's products. Should I learn about them and if so what and how?

The only Oracle products I've worked with are the database suite and Peoplesoft. Not sure what else they have. Well, I guess also MySQL and VirtualBox if you consider those products.

What are you currently using? It will probably be a big pain in the butt to migrate all your procs/functions/etc from your current db to the new one.

i'm an Oracle DBA. Oracle is a behemoth. They simply swallow companies. that statement doesn't say a lot.
oracle databases? hyperion? erp? peoplesoft?

frankly, their databases are good, just complicated. they aren't as easy to just "set up and get going". then again, they do target the enterprise market.

don't use Sql Developer if you can. it has a lot of features, but the GUI isn't very good. I prefer PLSQL developer or TOAD. (not free though).

i've had extensive experience with Oracle's ODI technology as well. shoot me a pm if you need help. :)

And very, very expensive.

you do get what you pay for. i agree that the amount of features that are licensed is ridicoulous, but the amount of features is ridicoulous. there are very few people who actually know most of the Database features.

know it well? no way. there are just too many. everything from semantic to spatial to workflow manager to creating your own custom data cartridges...

I definitely don't know it well, but I know what our yearly support payments were for a six processor Peoplesoft license, and it would buy a house in a lot of places.

Crap, forgot I made this post.

It has to do with financial accounting. We're probably taking some COTS stuff from Oracle and modifying it for government contracting purposes.
