Can anyone explains to me what is RC5? What is the benefit and what is it's purpose? I would like to help but I don't know the cause. Sorry, I am a bit behind and don't have the time now to do research and read more about it. I got an invitation with a PM and want to help out if some one please explain to me. I got two computers that I can use. One P3 800E and one Celeron 533@800. Please email me with the info.
Thanks.

Hey bad dude, I just had someone explain all this to me (as part of a recruitment pitch 😛)

The purpose of this program is to join several thousand computers in an effort to prove that 64bit encryption is
not safe enough for internet banking, etc... by cracking a code. Its other aim is to prove the value of distributed
computing, that is show that a very large number of home computers can perform together on a level usually
reserved for supercomputers. RC5-64 is sponsored by the major companies that produce the encryption
software as a way of testing. Basically, it would install and run a very small program that does mathematical
computation on your computer to try and find a hidden key amongst a few billion blocks. The program (client) is
set to the lowest priority on your computer, meaning that it will not slow any of your processes. It only uses
unused cpu cycles, making your processor run at 100% of its capacity. During that time, Windows would
produce garbage instructions anyway, so this just makes you use more of the cpu you paid good money for.
This generates a little heat (like running a game all the time) but if your system is cooled enough, ie stable when
you play games, there is no danger at all to your pc. If you are not overclocking, there are no danger at all.
Moreover, the client starts automatically when you turn on your computer and runs in the background. One of
the processes limiting the lifespan of your hadware is thermal shock and transient voltage when you turn on your
pc. You could do like me and always leave your computers on, so that the temperature remains stable. All I do
is set up power management in control panel so that my monitor goes to sleep after 20 minutes of inactivity from
my mouse or keyboard. Or you need not change your habits at all.

From a guy on one of the Team Anand sub teams.

Excuse me for being a newbie (I was assimilated a few hours ago by the borgs), but there is a pause button and a shutdown button under the cow in the taskbar. Couldn't these be used to pause the program when the machine is needed for other purposes?

"By the way I contribute to TA but I am not under a team.. considering forming one though."

same here.. we need as much competition in this team as possible!

the reason probably is that it would complicate the user's computer use, and therefor make things harder (incrementally so) on them.

basically it's just one more thing to do, and people are lazy!

Stark,
If you want it to run for a certain amount of time there is an option in the config to run for x amount of time then shutdown. Any help you could contribute would be greatly appreciated.

stark, did you find your solution (shutdown when a certain program starts?)?

NEW data for today, 17 days till we reach first overall! not bad!

Added a 700MHz Athlon to TACube tonight. Hope that helps. Got my 1GHz Athlon at work cracking too. Will probably bring a few more slower machines online next week. We're gonna take number one!!!

hmm.. this is certainly interesting!

DPC went down to 1.8 million blocks, and TA went down to 1.2 million blocks for yesterday.. I wonder why they went down soo far? maybe they're saving blocks?

anywho, today's numbers put us right back at that 20 day period before we beat Slashot (/.) for 1st overall.

Ok!! I'll be adding my friends PIII-750MHz and I guess my 433C laptop is gonna be cracking 24/7 from now on then. We need all the help we can get people..
