Opty vs 4000+

I'm going to be building a gaming rig at the end of this month and I was woundering If a 148 or 150 Opty would at least be able to achieve OC'd 4000+ Speeds. The new Rig will have sufficiant water cooling (If only I could afford Phase.)

I've heard good and bad things about the opty one of the things that I heard and thats putting me off them is that some of them have crud stepping or somthing.

So what would you do anyway? I'm leaning away from the 4000 at the moment and towards the opty (Question in itself there 150 actualy worth the extra cash over the 148?).

Also if I went with the Opty to could I still acheive a decent clock (looking for about 2.7-2.8) with the ASUS SLI mobo because I know alot of people with the Optys use the DFI ones over them (There more complicated though so I'm kinda hoping to stick with the ASUS one but in the end Performance is king).

Would greatly appreciate your help.

DFI offers some extreme-overclocking features like very high DIMM voltage without modding the board that Asus doesn't, but overall Asus makes high quality mb's & they also are almost always very good overclocker's as well, plus they are more stable then DFI & faster at default speeds. As for your expected OC speeds, nobody is going to promise you 2.7-2.8ghz for any CPU you buy..2.4ghz is a very good bet, but its really the luck of the draw as to how high you can go.
Finally, if your going to overclock, the best choice for a single-core CPU would be the 146 because its 10 multiplier will make your life easier, next best would be the 144 because its 9 multiplier will also help... by far the best bet however is either the dual-core Opteron 165 or (if you can afford it) the 170 because they both also OC very well... the 170 is the best choice because of its 10 multiplier.. both are in stock at Zipzoomfly for $316 & $400 including free fedex 2-day.

even the crap optys will still overclcok to 2.6ish, but if your getting a 148 or 150 you most likely won't get a crap opty, it gets a little more iffy at the 144/146 level that being said though I just got a CACJE (not the greatest steping) and got it to 2.8 no sweat and as soon as my ram is cleared up I should be able to get faster

I read up that the 150's have a 12x Multiplier and a 2.4 Base clock speed to work on, Shouldn't that be better for OCing?

Is there any type of stepping to avoid at all costs?

no with the athlons a big multiplier is more of a hinderence than it helps since most boards will run the "FSB" way higher than any chip could take anyway, and just use dividers to get your ram where it can run, since there is no penatly for out of sync memory.

I would get a 144 from mwave, they are a great deal if they are still in stock. steping wise its just the luck of the draw, the latest batch of 144s were CACJEs which aren't the top of the line steping but most are in the 2.7-2.9 range

I'm hoping for 2.6 on air with the 170 I just ordered... If I get 2.4ghz I'll be satisfied though since it was less then half the price of a 4800+! I'd still say go for the dual-core 165/170 over any single core, but the 144/146 is the best single core choice if you have your mind made up.

Not really interested in Dual Cores, this PC is going to be for gaming, by the time dual cores are of any use processors will have probably developed alot more / gone down in price.

Definatly going with the Oppy, So It won't really effect my top OC if i get a 148 or 146?? (moved away from the 150, To expensive and If what fall out says is right about the Multi then it's not worth it because I could probably get the 148 to similar levels).

Thanks again for your help guys.
