opty 165's selling on ebay auctions for $85+???

i dont get this, people are actually out bidding each other on ebay for used opteron 165s w/ good steppings and it regularly reaches ~$75, latest one is @ $81 on ebay (i believe i can't link to the auction, but u can check yourselves). I was trying to check the going rate as im gonna sell my cpu & mobo for a phenom 2 (x3-720) setup, and im shocked that i can sell it for so much. Indeed, this might very well be the cheapest upgrade ever for me if i can sell my opty 165 (which has the most sought after stepping cause it reaches 2.9ish) for a price like that.

How come people are paying so much for these ancient cpus??

Hah, i should sell my old 165 then...though i don't foresee anyone getting 2.9 outta it...

wow.:Q that's fantastic to hear. ebay here i come! i dont understand why ppl would do that though, who exactly would they pay more for a s939 system than a 775 system?

Some people are trying to salvage their existing system as opposed to building an entirely new rig. ~$80 for a "new faster" CPU is nothing when you compare that to the cost of building an entirely new rig.

This. People want the best bang for their buck, tis why I sold all my stuff for more than I paid for it 😛

The great stepping ones sell for $150-200 even.

$153 Opteron 165

Edit: anandtech is stupid with eBay links, its item number

No telling the item number either. It's the same as a link

no we just dont allow it.

I sold my 4800+ for 185 or something, and my Opteron 185 for around 230. My A8N32-SLI went for around 150$. It completely covered my switch to LGA775. 🙂

I sold my X2 4200+ for $106 and my Opteron 165 for $75. I still have some single core 939 chips I need to be rid of but I'll save that for some other time.

Geez, that's the same price as a new I7 920 and the auction has 4 days left.

Edit: It's a broken link, but with a little bit of initiative you will get it working again.
Edit 2: So I and Rubycon don't get in trouble - if you want to find it, search using this term on eBay:
Fast New AMD Dual Core ATHLON 64 FX-60 FX60 S 939 CPU

I also removed Rubycon's original link from the quote in this post.

Well, one man's trash is another's... whatever. I think it's not just about performance. For example, one of my friends collect stamps, and he bragged me about a stamp he bought for $1,500.. Well I wouldn't buy that for $15 for myself (unless there is a guarantee of resale) but it's obviously of much value to him.

And thinking about it, I wouldn't sell my Opteron 165 for $85. (It's one of those that hit 3.0GHz first) And I wouldn't sell my E2140 that gave me 100% OC for the first time. (125% to be exact).

Personal drama aside, the demand for Socket 939 CPU isn't surprising. It's the same thing as E6600 vs. E8400 today. An E6600 is more expensive than an E8400 and the difference will only grow for the forseeable future.

Wow. I wonder what i could get for my Opteron 165, ASRock 939Dual (AGP and PCI-E), and 2 gigs of DDR. If I parted that out, I could probably sell to people that want to stick with the platform. That board overclocked very well, too.

Are you fucking kidding?

I remember when the pent 4 3.4 ee was on sale at the Egg for 130$, now there going for 350+$ on ebay at auction.400$+ buy it now.

Thats crazy! The exact reason i'm going to upgrade to socket 775.

when a moderator types in bold like that, usually were being serious.

lordy lord im wetting my pants!!! looks like my upgrade to phenom2 might pay for itself!! would it matter if im shipping internationally? i'm currently in Japan working, u guys think ppl wont care for the shipping?(its really not that much to ship it first class since its a tiny cpu).

I have the seminal opty 165 stepping which was the best of the best (i remember cause I paid a premium for it!):

CCBBE 0610DPMW

its listed on this sticky @ overclockers.net as among the best and most consistent for 2.8ghz+ overclocks (heck i've pushed it to 2.9ghz but backed up to 2.8 @ a lower voltage)

hopefully it'll have good resale value.🙂 sweet!

I gave my Opty165 to a buddy for free when I went AM2+. It's crazy what some old out dated items will go for... my favorite video game, Panzer Dragoon Saga (32bit - Sega Saturn) I've seen go for $300+. FX60's just about sell for the cost of a newer a lower end quad+mobo+DDR2.

The thing is, it is a pain in the ass to switch motherboards. Its not super hard, but its a pain in the ass and may just be beyond the skill/comfort level of a lot of novices. Swapping CPUs used to be a lot harder then it currently is and is a drop in upgrade mostly. There's no need to worry about having to reinstall windows and all your programs.

So for some people, its worth the cost to pay for a small amount more performance.

I just transferred my OPTY 165 to my new HTPC. If I can sell the chip alone for $85, I can get a lower power x2 or maybe go halfway towards a matx board and phenom II x3.

Too bad I'm too lazy to sell stuff 🙂

True. Although if you're gonna swap CPUs, might as well take the extra 5 mins and swap mobos 😕

Socket 939 was an absolute gem, and there are a lot of people with older socket 939 chips that want a 'cheap' upgrade to the best chip for their motherboard.

Think about it, someone could have a FIVE year old motherboard, drop <$100 on an Opteron 165 or something, OC it a bit, and get performance equal to say, a brand new $70 Intel E2200 (which would require a new motherboard, RAM, etc). Someone with a Socket 478 board doesn't have this luxury.

Back when I upgraded to a E8400 system last year, I had planned on Ebay'ing my Opteron 165 to help recoup some of the upgrade cost. I had the 165 all cleaned and was about to put it in a box. Dropped it on my rigid tile floor and about half of the pins got bent. Tried to bend them back and they started breaking off. 🙁
