Opty 165 temp help!

Try putting 1.4v on the core just to see what happens. Your temps are good the restart/lock is either voltage, memory, or PSU I would say.

I'd try voltage and see what happens. You have turned off cool n' quiet etc right?
 
I'll try the voltage. I just don't see idling at 40° with everything at stock as "good". From what I've been seeing, most 165s are idling around 30-35° and load is in the 40s.

Yes, cool n quiet is off.

ambient temps play a huge role in your CPU temp. If someone is posting with their system next to an air conditioning unit or in the dead of winder when it's 20F outside, it's going to be a big difference from living in FL in the summer after it rained and the sun is steaming the moisture off the ground.
 
Well, you may say its nice, but I have never seen it reviewed, and its not a know brand, so it could still be junk. I can;t find a review of it. I checked silentpc and google.
 
Before I bought it I read a review on one of their power supplies. I can't find it now, or I'd link it. It is an inexpensive psu, so it might not be up to the load that's being put on it. But it's been perfect up to this point. I might just go ahead and replace it anyway. I was planning to when I did a system refresh in Feb, but I may just do it now...and get a better hsf while I'm at it.
 
Hmmm,.... looks to me like your board is slightly under V. I agree with cmdrdredd, get the volts up to at least 1.35 - 1.37 or even 1.40 and see how it does.
 
wow something's wrong. i'd say it was the motherboard. i've got a neo2plat and it idles @ 34c, 44c under load.

it could be the mobo itself isnt seating it right, no matter what you do. i would have said that it's reporting the temps wrong, but you said that it freezes when it idles hot. but don't optys work at high temps anyway?
 
Dual cores generate a lot more heat than an equivalent single core A64. 40C idle with a stock heatsink is normal. Low 50's load is also ok, I've ran my Opty 165 at those temps before I got a better cooler, and had no stability issues. Bump up the cpu voltage a bit; 1.35v is supposed to be the stock voltage, not 1.3v.
 
I bumped them up to 1.35 +100.4% in the bios. Cpuz shows 1.375v though, instead of 1.404v. Running orthos now. Give me about an hour to see if it locks up again.
 
Hi.. been reading these boards a while.. just wanted to chime in on this since I have been messing with my new Opteron 165 too. Those temps do seem pretty high to me. Currently I have my opty at ~2.835 on 1.35 volts. It idles at about 32-33 and highest I've seen it on load (Orthos) is 46, which is right now as I'm typing this. It has been going with no errors for about 20 minutes. I am using Speedfan to monitor the temps.

I am pretty noobish at overclocking, but I think this is a pretty damn good chip. I know it was one of the good CCBBE steppings as I checked before I put the HSF on, but I didn't write the rest of the numbers down. I haven't brought the RAM into the equation yet, but am hoping I can keep in the 2.8 range. I am kind of worried when I do increase my RAM timings though. Hopefully when the time comes, you guys can help 😛

Anyway, sorry to go off topic thanatos.. I was just a little excited about my chip.. I really do think those temps are high though. Maybe you just need a better HSF.. I am using the Zalman CNPSsomething or another.

That's Vdroop and it's normal. BIOS settings will typically be slightly higher than the actual.

werd. you can try d/ling a config file for your motherboard for Speedfan. my neo2plat now has a CPU temp and Core temp graph.

The absolute only thing that's changed is the cpu. I went from my 3000+ @2.4ghz @ 1.5v (for complete stability) to these 165s @ 1.8ghz @ 1.3v.
There's your problem. Set your vcore to 1.375v on the DFI motherboard, and either 1.375v or maybe even 1.40v on your mother's motherboard. You aren't allowing for vdroop, which is a huge issue with the dual-cores, unlike the single-cores (they're more likely to "crap out" at .05v under their optimal vcore, in other words).

edit: Oops, I read about the first 8 posts, and not one person mentioned vcore. I see that's been addressed now.😱
 
Is it possible since the Opty is not "officially" supported that the temps might be reporting wrong? I know it is hard to verify actual CPU temp but I doubt you got 4 bad CPUs.
