Hi i recently bought an opteron 165 i placed it into my abit an8 sli fata1ity motherboard and it fired right up fine 1.8ghz at a vcore of 1.35 uguru shows 1.38 on the front panel.
my question is this chip is currently running prime stable at 2800 with no extra voltage. can i be missing something that is gonna kill my chip or did i just get a good one?

thanks,

2.8ghz on 1.38 volts? Holy crap.

If you can get through prime with that there's nothing wrong with it... as long as you're sure it's 1.38 volts.

What are the temps? And did you buy it retail? I wouldn't expect such a late purchase to give you a great overclocking chip... usually by now efficient binning takes place.

wow that is 400Mhz over what mind can do with stock voltage.

i bet that you can do 3Ghz no problem

That should be a damn fast chip

2 instances of prime??? This is a dual core chip....

If you can get it to run 2.8ghz with 1.38v then you have an easy shot at 2.9ghz

well in bios it says 1.35-1.4 volts it jumps around a bit the uguru panel says 1.38 and its set to 1.35 in the bios. It was purchased retail im using the zalman 9500 for cooling. i had a san diego 3700 at 2750 in this board for about 6 months. i had a 4400 but it wasnt stable over 2.7 and yes im running two instances of prime with one running on each core. if i try 2.9 at 1.375 volts it doesnt prime for long before it fails. im not sure what i can safely take the vcore to? i want this chip to last but love tweaking to. currently my full load temp is 45C but its hot in my house currently.

dear god 2.8 and 45 C. amazing. you lucky *************************

polus i don't think higher clocks harm the chips at all. temperatures ans higher voltages do that. so if your happy at 2.8 (and with a 1 GHz OC i thinik you are) just don't raise the voltage.

Many of the good opteron steppings can do 2700 mhz on stock volts, and a few (like yours) can do even more. You should try to increase the vcore and go higher, it's safe to even at 1.5V or more, and you gave a good chance to go above 3 ghz.
My opty 165 does 2970 mhz dual prime stable @ 45C full load. The Vcore is 1.475V. I haven't even tried to go higher yet (in fact my opteron never failed prime95 on any setting I tried yet).

So what vcore am i safe to run this thing 24x7 on and still get a good long life out of the chip? ive heard optys should be kept below 1.45 but others say below 1.6? also where do most motherboards begin having trouble at im currently at 311fsb with a 3x ht multi id think i might run out of fsb overclocking soon?

up to 1.45v on air and no more than 55*C load. The temp is more of a preferance, though. Really, over 60*C load is too hot.

You have to run 2 instances of Prime95. One instance has to follow core 0, the other core 1.

Go to Avanced>Affinity. Assign one to 0 the other to 1. BTW, you have to have 2 separate folders for this to work.

But if you somehow manage to pass @ those vots, turn up more volts and find the limit for your CPU.

Amazing.

yeah ive ran 2 instances for about 8 hours so far and its fine im running large in place ffts. My board seems to overvolt this chip a bit though as i have it set at 1.35 and im getting 1.38 sometimes peaking at 1.4. so i shouldnt set my board about 1.4 then on air for a long life?

well i notice in your sig your running watercooling and 1.5 volts i mean 1.5 seems high to me for a 90nm cpu but im not sure just looking for opinions on whats safe and i mean if im at 1.38 am i going to gain that much going up in voltage or am i risking alot for another 100mhz.

what stepping is your 165? if its the same as mine then you should be fine. :D

the stepping is on the IHS of the cpu. which mean its on the top of the actual cpu. you can't get by using a program. it should go something like this: CCBBE 0610DPMW

its doesn't have to be exactly that but you get the idea. inorder to see it, your going to have to take the heatsink off the cpu...

which in my case is a pain in the butt to do. is there certain steppings that can take more voltage or something?

generally, steppings have common traits.

the steppings help determine whether or not you have a good cpu for overclocking or not. if you purchased your 165 recently from monarch (in the past 3 months) then you have a pretty good chance of getting a really good stepping that can achieve high htt/fsb speeds with minimum to no increase in vcore.

mine actaully came from a frys electronics. ive found though at 2.9 one core is fine the ither errors out immedieately even with 1.425 volts so i think 2.8 is about it which is ok my memory ruuns at ddr 400 2225 there

fry's sell opterons?!

anyway, just as long as you've tested it and know that it is stable at that speed, then your all set. enjoy!
