Complete N00b at OC

opty 165
DFI Lanparty NF4 Ultra D
mushkin eXtreme Performance (2 x 1GB) DDR 500 3-4-3-8
Dual Prime stable at stock vcore 2.52 GHz

Temps are ideal 24c-27c, full load 31c-35c

Here are the settings...
CPU - 280X9
HTT - 3X
Memory - 9:10 (252 Mhz) 1T enable and auto everything else (CPUZ reports 3-4-3-7)

Everything else at default

Stock AIR cooling..

I cannot push any further. Even at 285 FSB it fails core 0 after 2 minutes on prime (even though temps do not increase that much, well maybe, 2-3 degrees). Core 1 keeps on going. Tried pushing vcore upto 1.45 with no luck...

Have I reached the limit or can I try anything else?

1.5 is ok, my 3000+ can do 1.5, but I run 1.45 @ 2.52

Opterons usually OC better

You may have hit a wall on it. Not every chip is gonna do 2.7-2.8

Realize the rated speed is 1.8Ghz and you already got 800Mhz out of it.

I run my 3000+ @ 2.52 on a DFI Lanparty UT SLI-D using the same memory as you

280Mhz FSB
x4 HTT multi
9:10 memory ratio
1.45v on the core
2.7v on the memory
1.7v on the chipset
1.3v on the LDT

what bios version? I'm running 704-BT2A with these settings.

cpc enabled ( you may need to disabled with 1G sticks)
tcl 3
trcd 4
tras 8
trp 4
trc 12
trfc 16
trrd 04
twr 03
twtr 02
twrt 04
tref 3120 or 3072
twcl 1 (you may need 0= disabled)

DQS Skew Control = INCREASE
DQS Skew Value = 0 (zero)
Dram Drive Strength= 8 or 6 (704-BT2A= weak 4 or weak 3)
Dram Data Drive Strength= 4 (704-BT2A= Level 1)
MAX ASYNCH LATENCY = 8X
READ PREAMBLE= 5X
IDLE CYLCE= 256 cycles
DYNAMIC Counter= Disabled
R/W Que Bypass = 16x
ByPass Max 7X
32 Byte Granularity = Disable 8 Bursts

These timings will not kill you, but it may get you a higher overclock. I'd try this 9:10 and then maybe 5:6 if that does not pass.

Up to about 1.55V is safe on air cooling [depending on what you have], as long as you watch the temps.

Everyone thinks differently...

Stock air, go 0.5-1.5V max over stock [again, everyone thinks differently].
Water, go 1.5V-2.xV max over stock [again...everyone thinks differently].

Phase change, liquid nitrogen...who cares? Just go for 3ghz :p.

Thanks Juststarting,
I will try these timings. Here is the Bios Version for my Lanparty UT NF4 Ultra-D (not SLI)

While I agree 704-2bta is an excellent bios..note though several people including myself have done better with 623 bios..I prefer 623-2..I had less success with 704-2bta

also my ram seems happier in the yellow slots not orange like most

Well, putting 1.5V would let me go upto HTT X 290 = 2.61GHz. Dual Prime stable for 1/2 hour so far. Anything above it, it would not boot into Windows. Relaxing memory timings did not help at all. Also, the temps are becoming higher (idle 34-35 and load 40-42) with 1.5 and 290. So, I think I reached a point of diminishing return. I think I will settle for 2.52 (HTT X 280) with stock VCore when the chip runs much cooler.

Hey JustStarting,
Other than OCbility, what other goodies does it have?
Thanks

704-2bta is optimized to be "best" out of box bios with best settings to allow the avg joe to get up and running..has relaxed memory timings..will not necessary improve OC but theortically if ram and mobo are more stable you can do better

I have the exact same opteron stepping, same motherboard, and 2x1GB Mushkin Redline XP400. The max HTT i could hit stable was the same (290@3-3-3-8 1.4v) My max stable 1:1 HTT is 264@3-3-3-8(DDR 528) I've been playing with it for a few days with several different bios versions, diff voltages, you name it, used the DFI-street OC guide, good stuff btw. I think that's the limit of this chip run. Core 1 will keep going but Core 0 craps out any higher, no matter what voltage, almost identical to what you posted. I'm going to stick with 2.61ghz or as close as possible once i get my mem divider set.
