Bought one of these from AccuPC and received it last Friday. Have only burned 3 movie DVD's so far and the burner has performed flawlessly burning +R at 2.4x and 4x (using 4x Verbatim which DVDinfo revealed to be Ricoh discs). Burned one -R at 2x using Memorex
and am not sure of the brand since DVDinfo is not working on my machine now for some odd reason. None of the discs would play in an older Sony 7215 or a fairly new Apex 1201. All of the discs played in another Apex 1201 which I had determined was actually a rebadged 1100 model, and all of the discs played in a Onkyo 800. Burned a few Data Cd's and had no problem. Have had zero coasters. I successfully burned one HD BURN data disc and was able to read and copy files from it. On any subsequent attempts I kept getting a " track following error " which I am unable to correct. The B's Gold software which came with the drive did not have the HD BURN option enabled and I quickly uninstalled it as it doesn't coexist well with any applications that use aspi such as Nero. I was using Nero 5.5.10.35 for all of these discs. Apparently there is some flaw in this part
(HD BURN) of the drive which hopefully can be resolved through firmware. I have contacted Optorite about the problem and am eagerly awaiting a reply from them. If you are looking for a good multi-format DVD burner the price is right. But the jury is out at least temporarily in regard to the HD BURN as other new owners have reported the same exact problem. The HD BURN enables you to double the capacity of a 700 MB CD to 1.4 GB and is pretty much only good for data and can't be used for audio discs, but could possibly be used later for longer or higher quality Video discs. Sanyo ( the OEM mfg of this drive) has stated that they were going to give their HD BURN technology to DVD player manufacturers so they will be supporting the technology fairly soon. Cutting edge technology if Optorite can get it straightened out. Will post any info from them as soon as I know anything.

I am so tempted to go for this but I think I may have exceeded my Computer Peripheral purchase limit with my wife.

not to thread crap but isnt the NEC 1300A at $209 a better deal for a well regarded unit?

I actually just bought the Optorite and was also looking at that NEC drive. The thing that swayed me towards the Opto was the one year warranty. From what I've read, NEC doesn't seem to warranty the 1300's since they are OEM. But...I could be wrong about that.

If you want a solid proven drive that most people find to be rock stable and reliable, the Pioneer 105 is the one to get. True, it doesn't have multiple format support, but most people just use DVD-R with their combo drives anyway. The media is cheaper right now. If you must have dual format, I would recommend Sony or the new Pioneer 106, which will cost more, but you get a solid reputation behind the drive. Or try and find the Lite-On version.
