Hey, I'm thinking about buying one of these and selling my cd burner. I won't notice a huge difference going from 48 down to 40x correct? Just wanted to check on that before I make my decision. And how about DVD playing, going from 16x->12x is a big difference?

i have the Optorite 201 and it kicks ass...i use memorex DVD+R and ive never had a coaster...id ont see any point buyin a 8x because it takes so long to rip to the computer(25+min depending on the compression) whats waitin 15 to burn it...i use DVDshrink2.3 and nero6.0 they both work great....JM2C

Dude you may need to upgrade or at least get a Lite-On 166 LTD DVD Rom. I can rip a single layer disc in a little over 5 minutes. Based on a test ripping a 4.3 GB single layer disc it was 5:14. Using the same disc my Optorite DD0203 came in at 6:30. Dual layer discs take 12 to 15 minutes or so depending on the actual size. The Lite-On LTD 166 is top dog when it comes to extraction. Using EAC I can extract a 700 MB CD in 33 seconds and that is with the highest possible error correction. I'm running XP with a 1.7 Athlon and 512 memory. Of course I do think that the Optorite is the cat's meow in regard to DVD burners. After looking at your specs I can't believe it takes your computer that long to rip a DVD. Try using DVD Decrypter.

They should make a list of hd-burn reading drives........., I'm looking for a regular cdrom that can read hdburn for a couple other computers

You have to have a DVD drive with the HD-BURN firmware to be able to read HD-BURN CD discs. Currently there are DVD-RW's equipped with the HD-BURN feature made by Optorite, MSI, Sanyo, and Access Tek. They are all equipped with the Sanyo optical unit.

I like the Optorite because I already own one (the DD0203) and have burned several hundred DVDs without any problems. I like the HD BURN feature and have archived aound a hundred or so live music shows to a single HD BURN disc, so I would want another drive that burns and reads HD BURN discs. You might Google for reviews of the drives and try to find hardware site reviews. Optorite seems to have its share of critics, but most of them seem not to actually own an Optorite or they try to use junk media with poor results and then blame it on the drive.

In a word - No. Currently only the Optorite and a recent Sanyo and also MSI model support HD-BURN. Sanyo did state that they would freely give the technology to player manufacturers who wanted it. I am not aware that any other models are yet supporting HD-BURN. But if they come up with firmware that supports it, you would be able to read those discs on a DVD that had that feature enabled with the firmware. Currently you can only use HD-BURN for data discs including mp3's, etc. So you can't burn a 1.4 GB audio disc or SVCD, VCD using it. But with TV out on your graphics card you can use a 1.4 GB mpeg data disc in your Optorite and play it with PowerDVD or other similar software.

We need to email other companies to get them to take the hint to use this technology. Its cool.

Of course I got the Plextor 708A for $215 shipped from Amazon.com about two weeks ago or so. $135 is just an unbelievably good price. I work with a guy that bought a DVD burner for $500 a some time ago.

I received a news clip via e-mail stating that Sony will change its DRU-530 8x drive from an OptoRite unit to one make by LiteOn. It makes me think that the early/current DRU-530s are very close to the DD0401 (even though there was no mention of HD-BURN with the Sony), and that any new DRU-530s will be similar to the LDW-811.

I want to say that Digit-Life was the source of this news, but I don't have anything in front of me to confirm.
