I just installed the trial version of Photoshop CS 2 and I?m finding that it is running a little sluggish.

I had Photoshop CS on before and it would run ok for my needs.
I had a 1.3 MHz AMD machine with 396 Megs of ram.

After installing Photoshop CS 2 I found that I really had to close all extra programs to save a much memory as possible to use with it.

I went ahead and added a 512 stick of ram to the system and now I have 768 of ram, this has improved the performance but still somewhat sluggish and running both Photoshop and the new Adobe Bridge makes it more sluggish.

I have also moved the primary scratch disk to my secondary drive.

Do you think this is the best it will get without actually just upgrading the entire system?

I remember with older versions of Photoshop there were programs to reduce the start up time of it. YOu could do it manually too.

Turn your background layer into an actual layer (double click on background and make it into a normal layer).

Looking on google there was a comment that CS2 consumes close to twice the memory for him loading the same file into the program.

Seems CS2 may only be an upgrade for someone with a very nice machine.

In your case if you have DDR, I'd get a second stick of PC3200 (assuming you got that in your first stick) since that would be something you would get with a new system anyway. Then if the memory doesn't work out, plan on a MB/CPU upgrade and move over your gig with that.

If you have PC100/PC133, I wouldn't buy anything additional for it. I'd plan out a system upgrade.

Yeah its DDR

I had two sticks, a 256 and 128 DDR PC2100 and i kept the 256 stick and added a 512 DDR PC3200.

Your system barely meets the minimum requirements. So yeah, it will run like crap unless you upgrade.

Intel® Xeon?, Xeon Dual, Intel Centrino?, or Pentium® III or 4 processor
Microsoft® Windows® 2000 with Service Pack 4, or Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or 2
320MB of RAM (384MB recommended)
650MB of available hard-disk space
1,024x768 monitor resolution with 16-bit video card
CD-ROM drive
Internet or phone connection required for product activation

if you have a lot of plugins, it will slow down cs2. try remove any plugins that you will never use, it will speed up.
