Im also thinking about finally ditching my unlimited data on ATT. Ive been hanging on to it since my sister and I are both on the same plan, and are both grandfathered in on unlimited data. Ive been buying phones off contract anyway even though I know I can still upgrade and keep my data plan.

Problem is I know I can go somewhere else and pay less - so is it even worth it for "unlimited" data from ATT anymore? Im using a nexus 4, and she has a moto g - so we can both switch right now if we wanted to.

Depends. I know Verizon does not throttle. Does AT&T? Do you use more than 5 or 6gb at a time?

I'm keeping it and buying off contract because I use a lot of data on some occasions. No point to have the latest phone and 4g lte if you are going to be limited.

The worth of grandfathered unlimited data plan to you is directly related to how you are using it. How have you been using it? Average monthly data usage in the past year?

You may not even have to go anywhere else to pay less. Especially if you're used to buying phones off contract anyway, you really need to look at AT&T Mobile Share Value plans. You might save quite a bit.

at&t throttles unlimited (after 3 or 5GB). verizon and t-mobile doesn't

if you don't talk much on the phone, buy a prepaid t-mobile SIM and try out their $30/month prepaid plan (5GB data, throttled to 2G after that, 100 minutes). your phones should be unlocked already

if t-mobile'service in your area is decent, $30/month * 2 is worth buying a new phone @ retail whenever you want to. you pay $0.10/minute after 100 minutes, so even if you talk a little more, it could be worth it
