Options for getting data off of drive?

Hey guys,

I have an 80 gig Maxtor sata drive partitioned as follows:

C: 20 gigs / windows
D: 60 gigs / data

It froze half way through defragmenting D: with norton utilities, now I cannot access the drive, the computer will barely start if the actual hard drive itself is plugged in, regardless of what PC it's on or how ever many other hard drives are plugged in. I've formatted C: but not D:, I can't lose the data on it.

As soon as the computer tries to read from D: it locks up, so what are my options? If I format D: I will lose the data, but would a data recovery program work to recover the files even after I format?

Any help is appreciated.

Try shutting down the computer, pulling the power plug out of the machine, disconnecting the hard drive from the motherboard, powering on the system again to clear anything from the bios.

Then shutdown the system and reattach the drive to the motherboard in a similar fashion, reboot the system, and see if you can access the partition again.

It sounds like a filesystem error but it cannot hurt to try disconnecting the drive and see if it helps.

There are links for file recovery applications in the link in my signature. Try some of those, GetDataBack is my preferred but the two listed before it have been highly recommended by other people on this board.

Before formatting the partition, I would install a file recovery application on C: and attempt to recover the data from D:.

If this does not work, then delete the D: partition, recreate the partition, reformat the filesystem with a quick format, then reattempt file recovery.

EDIT: It may also help to try using a Rescue Disk to recover the partition.
OR, maybe a partition tool. These applications are listed in the link in my signature.

EDIT2: What was I thinking??? Please do not follow my advice in the italics above. Do not delete the partition and recreate. Just perform a quick format over the existing partition. The less damage done to the filesystem the better, until you recover your data, then you can do what you want. I am sorry about that, it was an unintentional mistake.

Hello,

DataRecoveryWizard
utility can help. Speaking about me, it was
easily able to restore deleted, lost file and unformat drive,
so I think you will also find it quite useful. Really recommended
tool, give it a try.
