Opting Out Of Amber Alerts

I had to check my phone to see if I was still opted in. I am but haven't received any alerts in at least a year

I got the one issued by Chemung County today while I was flying down the 90 westbound about an hour before the PA line. Certainly doesn't hurt to be in the know and keep an eye open. It costs you nothing more than minor annoyance if your phone isn't set to silent. This is coming from someone who isn't very empathetic.

After getting annoyed by amber alerts during a few meetings I decided to opt out. Does it make me a terrible person that I don't care about somebody else's abducted kid?
Opting out of other peoples' problems isn't your problem. Their problem started when they chose to get pregnant and bring a child into the world.

And yes, I chastised my parents for bringing me into this cruel world.

I opted out because they kept waking me up and even if you silenced the phone it still did the noisy alert. I sleep during the day and work nights.

ya know that if you hate this life so much there is a way out.

Just got one too.

Nobody cares about kids that aren't their own.

Speak for yourself. I pay attention when they come in, although usually the information is too vague for me to do anything (ie: Last seen in a Green SUV heading south). Well gee, guess I'll call in every Green SUV I see. 😛

i turned them off,

i actually tried to disable the emergency alerts ap but i could not until i rooted and used titanium to kill it

I only get them if they are quite local, and it's really rare (I've gotten maybe 3 in the past .. 6 months to a year?). Is it that more frequent elsewhere?

Quite rare is 3 in a year? I've gotten 1 alert in the 12 years I've had a cell phone. Everyone around me at the time expressed concern for the missing girl.

TC, you remind me of drivers who are mad about the traffic when someone may have just lost their life up ahead to someone just like yourself. Thinking only about yourself with no compassion for others.

Amber Alerts are mostly BS anyway. Everyone hears the "OMG kid is missing!" but then no one pays attention to the notice a little later that says "oh, we found the kid and they were never in trouble after all". Just fosters an atmosphere of paranoia.

Sometimes they're actually custody disputes -- mom calls the cops and says "OMG little Sophie was kidnapped!" and it turns out mom is just pissed that Sophie is with dad.

So, after getting annoyed by Amber Alerts in the middle of a few kidnapping get-aways, you finally decided to opt out. Does it make you a terrible person that you don't care about somebody else's kid who you abducted? Yes. Abducting someone else's kid already makes you a terrible person.

Are you also annoyed that they are sharing your personal details with potentially millions of people (appearance, vehicle, etc)? It must make it really hard to stop for gas or go to town for provisions without getting harrassed. How much food and water do you leave for the little girls sealed behind the false wall in your basement?

I turned them off when there was no way to silence the alert. I then removed the apk because I don't care if Obama can contact me.

Because we all know that when something happens sometimes, it really happens every time.

Kinda sorta slightly OT, but I hate the TiVo Emergency Alert system. Here I am enjoying a movie I recorded at 3 in the morning when some station decides to run the "Required Weekly Test". That's fine, the EAS needs to be tested, but does TiVo HAVE to exit my recorded program, change to the station issuing the alert, and FORCE me to sit through the alert? And then it doesn't even have the decency to start my recording back when it's finished! Would it be too much trouble for them to just display the warning on TOP of what I'm watching? Bastages..........

Now back to your regulary scheduled thread.
