optimizing network ?

Hello,

is there any way I can optimize network ? ... b/c it seems way to slow ...

I have : 2 win2k adv. serv. computers(they are always on if it matters), 2 win me(1 is always on, another one is rarely), 1 win98 laptop (sometimes on the network) ...

have 2 hubs ...

first hub : 1 win2k comp, 1 win me comp, second hub , dsl router in uplink

second hub: 1 win2k comp, 1 win98 laptop, 1 win me comp , first hub in uplink

I'm sure I have 10 mbit card/hub somewhere, so I wouldn't care about going more than 10 mbit, but what I have now, doesn't even look like 5 mbit 🙁 ... thanks...
 
Remember that 10Mb/s is half duplex and collision based. If you're getting 5Mb/s on your network you're doing just fine.

10 mb is the theoretical limit really, but isnt half duplex 10mb and full duplex 20mb? The poster may also not understand the difference between mb and MB. It is a common problem. Also windows machines are notorious for broadcast messages.
 
well , I did Qcheck, and it seems pretty good , about 8mbps , I don't know why it seemed slow for me : )

10 meg ethernet operates with a carrier of 10 megabits/sec.

Take this with a grain of salt, results may differ dependant on a sh!t load of variables.

God, i love blowin minds with this...believe it or not your 10 Base-T ethernet is clocked at 12.5 megabaud (12.5 megabits/sec), 100 Base-T is clocked at 125 megabaud and gigE is clocked at 1250 megabaud. but carrier is 10,100,1000 respectively.

 
Spidey, I thought 10bt was manchester encoded, using 20megabaud, while 100bt/1000bt was 4B/5B encoding, therefore useing 20% more.

Yep, sure enough Enet is manchester@20 megabaud. FastE is 4B/5B at 125 megabaud, GigE is 8B/10B at 1250 megabaud. (good old cisco LAN switching bible)
