2 great guides. windows has never been so stable and fast for me!!!
highly recommended
sticky :D

EDIT: 2nd link fixed, sorry. i typed it in by hand lol

Best way to optimize XP - get a decent graphics card, and get 512MB + of RAM, and don't run malware or spyware apps.
graphics cards have almost nil to do with how windows xp runs....512MB+ram is always good, and ovbiously, spyware isnt good at all. but if you run WinXP stock, with no tweaking changes, it will be a horrible mess. windows messenger, security center, error reporting, mic. startup apps, all unnessary crap that can easily be turned off. you sound like you need to read these guides.

Install it on a machine with something like an ATI Rage128 and you'll think otherwise.

ut if you run WinXP stock, with no tweaking changes, it will be a horrible mess.

Right, because the people who wrote it obviously have no idea how to make it run well.

WOW
im not even going to argue anymore with you, its a waste of my time. you seem to think that windows messenger, error reporting, and all of the other bull$hit that runs in the backround is GOOD? thats the horrible mess i was refering to. and the guy that thought that Windows XP was somehow GPU intensive, and would benefit from having a "good" video card? good now days is 9600pro and up. so now people need to spend $100 on a graphics card to render their 2d desktop? god, if you dont want the URL's, i dont care..but dont start a flamewar about something you obviously know nothing about.
im out,
nick

We'll agree to disagree on the graphics card bit - try Intel Extreme on a machine with not enough memory (the graphics card contends with the rest of the system, sharing RAM), running a 1024x768 24 bit image. Run a few CPU tests while moving windows around with said graphics card. Ouch.

I don't need to read those guides. I've read them, and I'm familiar with what happens when people rush in and turn off all kinds of things they don't really understand and then experience problems because they've turned of something they need - but they don't know what. And as another poster said, they don't know how to configure their machines better than Microsoft.

The gains experienced in most of those hacks are very, very marginal. The simplest advice is to run a normal XP system as Microsoft configured it, but get enough memory to do so smoothly.

There's another good site, which can be googled by typing in "optimize xp" :p. not joking; it's like the 1st one that pops up. out of all of it though, the only thing i tried was the TCP optimizer. oh and the online virus scan - trend micro i believe it was.

No, but they're not necessarily bad either. If you don't use them they won't use any CPU cycles and they'll be evicted from memory if necessary.

i know what you mean, same thing happens when i dont have any drivers installed for my 6800GT. but then again, i had a Riva TNT2 that ran windows great, no stuttering while moving the windows around. that was a 32MB card, and i ran windows at 12x10.
the guides mentioned do a pretty good job of being "noob proof". most of the tweaks cant harm your system, but there are a few that you should have a backround with and know what you are doing, so you dont "f" up your windows instalation.
Microsoft has to ship theyre OS in a fashion that is very scalable, and that has work on a large range of hardware out of the box. Most of the tweaks just trim the "fat" off of windows, disabling stuff that is unnessary. obviously, this varies person to person.
ive got to go, cya all later

EDIT: i dont disagree with you on the subject of graphics cards, but all i am saying is that having one isnt NECESSARY. you can turn off the visual goodies, and that should improve windows performance quit a bit if you are using an older/crappy video card with low ram.
