Optimal settings for data transfer

This thread about transfering data from old HDD to new one has me thinking...

I was always taught that the best data transfer rate will be achieved if both drives are on different IDE channels and both are set as master. (New drive = Primary Master / Old drive = Secondary Master).

Does this still hold true?

Transferring large amounts of data over the drives, if they can each really hit 50MB/s regularly...then yes.
However, the difference is not as great as it used to be.
