Toshiba Laptop as follows:
Celeron 400mhz, 192mb Ram, 6.4gb HDD

Will be used for following: ICQ and web browsing, word and small excel docs, coding in C++ and Java. What do you think the optimal O/S would be for this config to do the above things and I'm looking for best performance and stability

podolak, I'd say put Windows 2000 Professional on that laptop. Stay away from Windows 95/98/ME if you care anything about stability. You could get better performance if you could add more memory.

Unfortonatly 192 is the max on the laptop...It was 64 and I was running 98 due to that fact but now that I've upgraded it to the max I figured it was time for a better O/S. I was thinking Win2k myself but wanted to get an idea. Thanks!

I have a K62 350 160 megs of Ram laptop running Windows 2000.

its a little slow at somethings, but its a lot more stable than it was with Windows 98.

Its currently running Redhat 7.3 though.

Some flavor of a Linux OS itself could run reasonably well on that laptop, given some tweaking, but if you really need to use word or excel files that will be tough. OpenOffice or the like will be very, very slow.

my lappy's a P2-400 w/ 288MB (max ram) its running XP on one drive and RH72 on the other... XP will run fine if you disable all the crap extras in the GUI and system restore, and all that...

Linux runs better though, I'd suggest it, but it depends on your experience and preference.
