Optical SATA on ICH9R or JMicron? (P35-DSQ)

Alright so I am putting my new rig together tomorrow morning.

I am just wondering by preference if it is better to use the JMicron SATA ports or the ICH9R ports for the optical drives. Mainly worried about compatibility or silly issues if using one or the other.

Board is a P35-DSQ and optical's are Samsung and Lite-On drives (I wouldn't think the model # would matter much, let alone the manufacturer)

Thanks

Probably best to use the ICH9R, Windows may not recognize the JMircron controller unless you install drivers for it.

That makes sense, I don't even know if XP will recognize the SATA ports on the ICH9R without a disc either.. I wouldn't think so anyway, time to slipstream some in I guess!

So overall, and mainly to sum this up using either the ICH9 (built in ports) as compared to the JMicron really makes no difference other than install issues?

The reason I am asking this is because I remember a motherboard I had with an add on raid channel (IDE) and it didn't work well at all with optical drives. Kind of like the add in PCI IDE cards having issues with optical drives also...
Is this something that is no longer an issue with respect to SATA and optical drives, or is it pretty much YMMV kind of thing?

I know with the IDE cards, optical drives would sometimes seem to work, and then when burning discs would mess up or error out.. I am just trying to avoid that if possible from the get go, and I have seen the performance for data transfer is better on the ICH9 so I would prefer to use that mainly for my hard drives.

Thanks

If you use a SATA optical drive on the ICH9, you can disable the JMicron controller in your BIOS if you have no other legacy IDE devices. This can resolve the conflicts some people have with this hardware, and worst case, eliminates the need for installing drivers.
