So my DVD player has digital optical out for 5.1 sound, and my amplifier has 2 rows of 3 (6) input jacks for 5.1 digital sound from a DVD player. Is there a converter that will go from an optical cable to the 6 output jacks on my receiver?

sounds to me like your receiver either just doesn't do dolby digital (it depends on an outboard processor), or just has coax inputs (unlikely). i know there's a optical->coax converter - i'll look for it.

Multi channel inputs (I.E. the six jacks) are analogue and they are for sound that is already decoded from digital into discrete analogue streams. If your receiver doesnt have a digital in and your DVD player doesnt have 6-channel analogue out I'm afraid that you're out of luck.

Your best bet is to run a stereo audio signal into your receiver and use Pro-Logic.

What receiver do you have, btw?

I'm trying to connect my aiwa av-d50 (the manual can be found in .pdf format on their website www.us.aiwa.com) and my Panasonic DVD-RV32, also .pdf found at their website at www.panasonic.com. both manuals have the pictures of what I am talking about. And they both do dolby digital 5.1 . . . I just can;t seem to figure out how to do it without some mircal converter. there is no optical on the aiwa that I can find, and for dolby digital 5.1 it has 6 input jacks (not coax). the panasonic has maybe a couple jacks, but nothing that would fit all six on the aiwa that I can see.
Help is appreciated thanks!

The DVD-RV32 should have one optical connection going out from it, but I can't find any pics of the AV-D50.

Your Aiwa receiver is digital-ready, meaning it can accept 5.1 channel analog inputs but it cannot decode the 5.1 digital format on its own.

As others have said, to get 5.1 using this receiver you would need a DVD player with 5.1 channel analog outputs. Either tha tor you need to buy a separate Dolby Digital decoder that accepts digital inputs and has 5.1 channel analog outputs (assuming such a thing exists).

I'm in the same situation right now and that is why I am looking to upgrade my receiver.

Edit: if the Aiwa does have a coax input, maybe that converter would work.

I looked at the manual at Aiwa but there are no S/PDIF inputs. fuzzy bee is correct, you need an external decoder to get DD5.1/DTS

Thanks for your help guys. there is no COAX in the back of the aiwa. I hooked it up to aux for now and it works fine, but I'd really like to make use of that DD 5.1 Guess I'll just have to grab a new receiver one of these days :p

yes i'm fairly sure those do exist, i mean how did people do it in the "old days" you could get a new receiver for about 150....that's how much i paid for a JVC RX-7000........and it's great! :-D
good luck
