Optical Mouse Poll.... Best Buy is insane.

Homerboy

Lifer
So I had to make a quick run to Best Buy at lunch to pick up a new Mouse (see my thread HERE)

So I grab (the last) MS IntelliMouse Explorer they have on the shelf and saunter on up to the checkout. I get asked the obligitory "would you like to purchse the 2yr maintance program for $8 (mind you they asked me the same question on a $15 gamepad pro 2 weeks earlier... ummm a serivce plan on a $15 controller? Common...)

Anyways, I say "Uh... no thanks" where she reorts with "You do know that the average life span on all optical mice is 4 months."

er.... (in my best Moe Szyslak voice)... "Whhhhhhhaaaaaaaaa?!?!?"

I simply say no "No thanks" and finish my transaction.

So... the poll here is, not if Best Buy is crazy, but rather how long people's Optical Mice are lasting... I would hope longer than 4 months!!!

Please feel free to add you comments too 🙂

Mine's lasted at least 5 months now. Forget when exactly I bought it, but ive had no problems with it whatsoever. (btw I have a Logitech Optical)

my first intellimouse explorer lasted about a 16 months. then it just died. i'm on number 2 right now and it has about 10 months or so under it's belt.

The manufacturers warranty is longer then 4 months, do they honestly believe that the manufacturer is selling a product in which they are well aware their going to have to RMA almost every device if the average life-span is merely 4 months?

2 Logitech Optical Mice here, one living for 8 months and going... another has been with me for 14 months and also still alive.
I worked in a computer store long enough to know that the RMA rate for even Microsoft's first revision optical mouse was reasonably respectable, and I most definitely did not see a large number returned within 4 months.
The majority of companies don't make a habit out of selling products with RMA rates so severe that the 'average' life span is 4 months or less.

That said, I strongly prefer Logitech's optical mice over MS's and consider them to be have higher quality. My experiences with Logtiecth's seeries of optical mice has been very good indeed.

Both my friend and I bought the same mouse the same day and have been running flawlessly for 1 WHOLE WEEK NOW 😀. I was wonderiing if anyone has been using those cool mouse pads like Everglide or Ratzpads? I have used mine just on the desk when I play golf games and its pretty fast. They have all kinds of cool things to make the mouse slide faster at the Everglide site has anyone used the stuff?

Seriously, who cares what Best Buy says.

At least for the Microsoft Hardware peripherals, the warranty is quite long, and they replace anything free of charge, express shipping, no questions asked.

I've replaced 2 mice and a gamepad with a total phone time of under 5 minutes and a total cost to me of $0.

BB needs a profit. There is so much computer competition that there isn't much profit in the actual hardware. Thus BB makes most of the money on extended warranties. Consumer Reports did a study that found roughly 90% of an extended warranty is pure profit on computer hardware - only 10% is ever returned to the customer for repair or replacement. Thus BB always makes claims like that. Everytime I make a BB purchase I bring my magazine copy with me showing that statistic - it keeps them from hounding me. Try buying a computer from them - it is a nightmare if you don't purchase the extended warranty.

I own two Logitech wheel mouse optical mice. Have had the blue one for 2 years and the red special edition one for 3 months. Both are working great, never had any problems. I love Logitech mice!

Don't believe BB all the time, they are just trying to sell warrenties. "Would you like to purchase a 4 year protection plan on that NSync CD?"

i voted 9-12 months but it is still working fine. I bought a memorex optical from BB for $12. it broke in 1 month. but it was complelty my fault. I kept leaving it pluged into my laptop when it was in the carry case and all the smashing pulled the ps/2 connector from the rubber casinng. If i find my soldering iron i bet i can fix it if I figure out whichwire goes to what lol.

Guys, I know that BB is insane... I'm just PROVING that here 🙂
I just feel sorry for the ignorant average consumer that goes there, hears that and buys into it, then forks over an extra $8 for the policy.

I guess nobody told her that Optical mice have virtually no moving parts compared to normal ball type mice so reliability is better overall, especially with Logitech 🙂.

My Optical mouse is only one year old but even I expect it to last 5 years plus 🙂.

Yeah it's like with car companies that sell you a vehicle. They make more money on extended warrenties than the actual profit margin on the sale in alot of the cases.

well... more optical mice have failed on me than ball mice, and the one ball mouse that failed was because of the cordless portion failing.
And I've used ball mice for far longer than optical mice.

So while I think the extended warranty is a waste of time, this part isn't necessarily true.

I was speaking in general ,also this quote from a website,

<< Optical mice have several benefits over wheeled mice:

No moving parts means less wear and a lower chance of failure.
There's no way for dirt to get inside the mouse and interfere with the tracking sensors.
Increased tracking resolution means smoother response.
They don't require a special surface, such as a mouse pad.

🙂

WTF are they smoking?? The Explorer comes with a lifetime warranty. And MS' RMA process is excellent🙂

All my mice have lasted longer than 6 months, probably less than a year.

When I first got the IntelliMouse Explorer right when it came out ($73),after about 3 weeks the finesh wore off the top where my class ring was and finally the whole top cganged colors so I took it bact to comp-use and they replaced it on the spot, because I had the $4 dollar extended warrenty.I change my mouse ever three months untill the new IntelliMouse Explorer came out,and Comp-usa exchange my old mouse with the new one,and refunded me the diff of $73 dollars of the new $53 dollar Intel Explorer 🙂.
I again renewed my policy for $4 dollars. The diff in refund paid for my warrenty for the year and a half I had the IntelliMouse Explorer.MS would not exchanged the mouse because the color wore off,I called them, and they ask was it working!! I said yes and they said too me,to bad so sad your problem. But MS will replace a broken mouse with no questions asked.
I love the new ver the color is in the plastic like the first batch IntelliMouse Explorer should have been made.

nice sence of humor sharkmeat 😉

anyway, i have two optical mouse. They're both Inland's purchased cheaply from fry's. I've had one for about 9-12 months and the other for about 5 or 6 months and both work flawlessly.

You could have responded with:

"You know, the average person with a clue about ANYTHING can move on from their degrading, minimum wage best-buy checkout position within 4 months. So how long have YOU worked here?"
