Optical Mouse? Hmmm....

I was noticing the prices on the optical mice are getting fairly reasonable. However, are they really worth having? I've always been fine with a $10 POS. What's the big difference with the opticals?

I use the 4-button optical wheelmouse Intellimouse Explorer - I think it is excellent. I've set up the two extra buttons (which are programable) to "back" and "close," which I find very helpful. The more buttons the merrier am I. With the desktop I have, though, I've found that I do need a mousepad - I use the thin 3M Precise Mousing Surface.

Right now, I'm using a Logitech Mouseman Wheel USB 4button. Still can't decide if I should replace it with a microsoft optical. does optic mouse have smoother arrow movement complared to a regualar USB mouse?

I think the optical mouse is one of the best things to happen to computers in a while.. I use to get so frustrated with those other mice that use to stick all the time

OPtical mice are great.. Cleaning is so damn simple its something you have to experience.

I recently got the M$ optical mouse and it worked fine in Win98. But when I upgraged to winME, the forward and backward buttons don't work with Netscape anymore. Of course, they work when exploring my computer or using IE, but not Netscape. I know others that have the same problem too. I have a feeling M$ is pulling a dirty trick on us🙁

If you've got a better deal, on any mouse, other than this Microsoft IntelliEye IntelliMouse for $29.99, I want to see it! Run, don't walk, over to BestBuy and grab a couple. Why run? Because if you don't, the only similar one you'll be able to get, is the non-optical INTELLIMOUSE Ver. 1 for $20.54, the weird INTELLIMOUSE OPTICAL for $39.57, the huge INTELLIMOUSE EXPLORER for $51.44 or the weenie WHEEL MOUSE OPTICAL for $23.63. It looks like Microsoft is discontinuing the IntelliMouse IntelliEye. 🙁

I just found out the Microsoft will be replacing your defective IntelliEye IntelliMouse with the INTELLIMOUSE OPTICAL instead. THAT SUCKS!! :|

I got the kensington optical mouse pro today, and it's pretty cool. Smooth as can be.

Only problem, if I don't leave a ps/2 mouse plugged in, windows kills the keyboard...

I got a logitech optical mouse for christmas. its the blue one...i forgot the model but its like their wheelmouse but blue, and it kicks ass. now ive got a logitech wheel mouse (ps2) a logitech trackball (serial adapter from ps2) and my new logitech optical mouse (usb) all hooked up. wow thats way too many. anyway optical mice are cool. and it lights up! =)

I just got one for the Mac at work and I can't tell the difference, it glides the same as the ball mouse, but I guess It's only been a day. Maybe by next week I'll be sold.

Maybe ...

I just got a Logitech Mouseman wheel optical and I love it. At first I had some MAJOR problems that I couldn't seem to fix until I got rid of my mouse pad which was a tad bit shiny and caused my mouse to faulter at times. So now I use a pice of paper taped to my desk. No slip ups anymore. Now I can recommend this mouse to anyone.

The biggest benefit, which no one has mentioned so far, is that you never need to dig around the inside of it to clean it. Just wipe off the top with a rag and its as good as new (unless, of course, you spraypaint the intellieye black or something).

<< With the desktop I have, though, I've found that I do need a mousepad - I use the thin 3M Precise Mousing Surface. >>

The only complaint I have with optical mice is the teflon "feet" wear down after awhile without a mousepad. I ordered a ratpadz from 3DCool but they're on backorder and the (s)uckers won't cancel the order. But I picked up a 3M PMS so they can kiss my ass. The thing is so thin it's almost like no pad at all. hmmm... this is starting to sound like a Stayfree commercial. 😀

Anyway, opticals are super smooth and you can use nearly any surface.

I've used my Intelli mouse explorer for just a little over a year and the feet have never worn down! They get dirty so I clean them but I never had to change them.

"the weird INTELLIMOUSE OPTICAL for $39.57,"

how is this mouse WEIRD?

it's one of the best damned optical mice out there. multiple buttons, left or right handed capability, and of course, optical.

it's better then the right handed only version because it's smaller (IMHO), AND the intellimouse optical costs less too.

The IntelliMouse is the perfect mouse shape. Sucks to be a lefty I guess. The IntelliMouse IntelliEye has the identical shape. Hell, it's the same shell! This is the mouse that millions of people have used for over 7 years now. Why change? I don't want too! Besides, the IntelliMouse IntelliEye version is available at BestBuy for $29.99. Now, how much did you say the IntelliMouse Optical was selling for?

Yeah they don't really "wear down" but the teflon coating wore off on mine. Just got a new one and it "glides" better than the old one. Not that it takes much to move a 5oz mouse but I want to keep it new as long as possible.

I know i'll probably get flamed major for this, but if desktop space is at a premium, I strongly recommend trying the Logitech Marble+. Yes, i know it's a trackball, but try it first. I wouldn't use anything else, although i am tempted by the optical mouse thingy's but I really don't have the desktop space for a mouse.

Just go here to get it for $30😀

I got a Logitech optical scrolling mouse to use with my laptop when I have it semi-permanantly set up in my dorm room, well worth the money. After using my old mouse (which has to have an out-of-round ball or something) the optical mouse is simply wonderful. So far, the optical mouse also seems to have a much greater time between cleanings. My last mouse needed cleaning about every 1-3 months (&^%$ cats get their hai everywhere). I think optical mice are kind of like scrolling mice and power windows, if you never use one, you can get along without it, once you try it though, there's no going back.
