Optical mouse for Laptop?

Hi All,

I am new to Laptop usage, although I have had PCs for many many years. I just got a used Dell Latitude C600 which has, for a mouse, a small rectangle and a very small little stud to manuever the pointer. It is very sensitive and very difficult for me to use. Also, I don't have the manual for the system.

What I would like to do is add a PS/2 regular optical mouse to the system to use when the Laptop is not mobile.

Question is: Do I have to some how disable the current mouse system and then add the PS/2 mouse? If so, how to disable? I did try a serial mouse, which I am not certain is in working condition, but it did nothing. It looked like the OS, Win 98 SE accepted a new device but it had no affect when I moved it.

Just what need I do to add a mouse and not have to use the current hardware which is so sensitive that the cursor moves all over the screen and is difficult to control?

Thanks,

Len

with my laptop (a sager) I just plug and play, do it before loading though, as i believe the ps/2 connector can be fickle about that..

although USB should be nicer about it.

Thanks, Skibbi, for your reply.

Are you saying all I have to do is plug-in the new Mouse and it should work? Does it disable the on-board mouse devices or will they still be active?

you know what, I don't have much experience with that...

I've always plugged in a keyboard to my ps/2 slot and an MS Intellimouse explore to a USB slot when its home, and use the pad when i had it on the road/school... For my computer the Pad would still work (for better or worse) when the mouse was in, though it would be an easy bios enable/disable command.

I dont like laptop keyboards much.

Thanks, Skibbi, for your continued interest in my problem.

AS soon as I get a working mouse, I'll try it in the pS/2 port.
I haven't checked the Bios in this Laptop yet, so I guess I should. If there is a place to disable the on-board 'mice', I'll do that also.

Thanks,

Len

I went into the Cmos and saw entries for the mouse. You can use a serial mouse, just a PS/2 mouse or the integrated mouse and/or PS/2 mouse. Which is very good.

I tried my serial mouse and got the cursor but it didn't do much. Like I said, I don't think the mouse is working anyway.

I went back and restored the internal devices/PS/2 and the first time it rebooted, it said 'no mouse detected'. Naturally, I paniced, but the second time I rebotted, the internals worked again.

I guess I now now what I should do. Get a decent PS/2 mouse and it should work fine.

Thanks for all the help.
