input devices are very much personal perference as far as Brands go..

go to your local Best Buy, and see how they feel in your hand.. I personally hate Logitech mice.. just don't fit right in my hand, but some people sware by them..

I have an MS Optical Wireless, and love it!

I have the MX500.

I moved away from ball mice as soon as it was possible. I have never looked back. I've had a MS wireless , and returned it due to poor reaction time.
Save some money get the MX500 or up.

You will not regret!

Peace!

corded optical mouse. get a cheap one from microsoft ($10?) and you'll be a happy gamer. who needs a huge logitech mx500000000000000?

I'm still using a Logitech FirstMouse 3button ball mouse as my gaming mouse, although I do have another $12 MS Intellimouse Optical v1.1a for regular usage. You don't need expensive mice, just one that you feel comfy with.

ok i noticed that some opticals cost like 50+ dollars....my question is, are they better? or are you paying that much for a brand name?
They are marginally better. As far as tracking, anything above the MX310 (~$30) is overkill. However, feel matters. If you like the higher cost ones, like the MX510, it will be worth it. For that same reason, I stick w/ the $15 Logitech. Also, you'll have to go towards better tracking eventually, because you'll develop GMS (Gamer Mouse Syndrome), and where 350DPI used to be fine, you will be able to make movements smaller than the 800DPI currently used 🙂.

If you're still using a ball mouse, buy something else NOW! Even the crappiest optical mouse will be far superior to any ball mouse.

Oh, I'd highly recommend Logitech over Microsoft. I'e had my Logitech Corded Optical for about as long as I had three MS Intellimouse Opticals (the smaller ones), and this one I got used.

Does anyone have experience with the ranges on these cordless mice, also? I'm curious how far away you can be from the receiver.

I got my mx1000 about 8-10 feet from the receaver before i had any problems.

An awsome mouse!
Remember, you get what you pay for.
Watch out for those cheap Intellishit wireless mice, because they really do suck.

Agreed, I have quite a distaste for my MS cordless optical. I got it for my HTPC, when I'm sitting away from the computer. I am using my corded instead when at the computer. It's much much better. The scroll wheel on the cordless is crap. It's real heavy, too.

I have both mice installed in Windows. Cordless on a KVM switch, the corded plugged into a USB port.

Think I'm gonna get the mx510, though. Figure I'll like it better than my corded MS Intellimouse.

Edit: Just bought it. Thanks for the info.

In my experience it depends on where you have things. On a metal case, the receiver doesn't do as well as even further from the mouse when it (the receiver) is placed on a different kind of surface. Some experimentation may be in order. Right now I'm getting good results at 8 feet or so.

well i mean i dont use a ball mouse, i have a cheapo 5 dollar optical. my question is, how is it different. are the more expensive ones smoother?
sorry if this is a stupid question, but i really dont know.

i have a cheap $5 mouse at home and a microsoft intellimouse one also. the $5 one is HORRIBLE! it clicks horribly and when you move the mouse too fast, it moves in opposite direction. also, the more expensive ones are better in every single way.
