optical mouse clarification

I have been reading alot of posts regarding the MS Intellimouse Explorer, Optical and the Logitech Mouseman Wheel optical. To clear things up a bit, the new and improved sensor isnt any smoother than the original. the problem that was addressed and fixed with the original sensor is the tracking. The first generation Explorer for instance. What happened when the mouse was lifted and recentered? It still tracked. The improved, second generation sensor alleviates that problem and doesnt track when it is lifted. I noticed this when I bought the MS Intellimouse Optical. I had some problems withit and took it back for a Logitech Mouseman Wheel, also boasting a second generation sensor. sure enough, the tracking problem was fixed with it too. Hope this clears hings up a bit for those of you who are wondering what the new sensor is all about.

What are you talking about? I just tried it and it didn't track anything when it's in the air. Obviously you do have to raise the mouse high enough in the air for the laser to lose contact with the surface (duh!).

Mine seems to track up to 1/4 inch of the pad.

Inside is a high detail camera, and u have to be very close to surface to track, becuase when ur in the air, it will just be blury since it has nothing very close enough to focus on

My point exactly. With the first generation sensor, it would still track at 1/2" off the surface. Now it stops tracking at about 1/4". In all, thats what the second generation optical sensor is about.

it also depends on the surface you're using the mouse on.
I'm using my Logitech optical (1st gen) on a wooden surface and it stops tracking with about 1/8" clearance.
This increases to 1/4" on 2 dollar Ikea cutting board that i thought would make a good mouse pad.

Finality: 2000 shots/sec? Where did you hear/see this? When I bought the MS Intellimouse Optical with the second generation sensor technology, the back of the box still said 1,500.

I had one of the original intellimouse explorers. I think that you can tell the difference between old and new by looking at the numbers on the bottom of it. The serial number below the upc looking strip should start with a PX or PN and then a zero if you have old it says 4, if it's the new sensor it says 5. The box for the 33% faster one I changed to still says 1,500 times a second.

jeffrey: According to what you said it looks like I have one of the new ones. My box does not say it is the newer one. I had it since July. It reads: "P/N X05-..." What are the chances it is one of the "Improved" ones?

Well folks, I have a Genius optical mouse and it only partially tracks when it's about 2mm off the surface (that's about 0.079 of an inch for you imperial folk). The mouse works great. I only wish their software were a bit more pro. It has a cool 'netscroll' mode for the wheel which scrolls whatever is under the cursor instead of whatever has focus. It's really nifty because you can scroll something in the background without giving it focus even. The only problem is that using this wheel mode causes GDI errors after an hour or so. So I use the normal wheel mode. Some other people I know who have the same mouse don't have this GDI eror problem when using the 'netscroll' wheel mode though. Oh well.
