So where is the hot deal?
Its a different mouse. I happen to own both.
Wheel Mouse in original post is great for gaming,
Basic Mouse in OM ad skips .

There are a bunch of vendors on pricewatch that will match those prices, so nothing special here. E.g., do a search under "logitech optical mouse".

Personally, I love the light weight of the basic 3-button Logitech optical.

for some reason i hav a hard time believing the no name black optical mouse is $13.

i saw the ms optical wheel mouse and ibm optical mouse for $10 (oem) @ pc club the other day.

I'm using the one from OM right now and it's excellent for my use (I'm not a gamer) with no skipping that I can detect.

The MS basic optical mouse (OM one) is not the best mouse opn the market, but its good. I bought one a while back for 8bucks. It is good though for an average user (read: browsing, email, office, 2d related etc). I bought it for my laptop, and for my purposes it works great. I have noticed it to skip sometimes even when using a mouse pad, but that is very rarely, and I believe it could be cause the mouse pad is kinda small and sometimes I move the mouse off the pad accidentally 🙂. Anyways, great mouse for 5 bucks. Plus, if you have a problem, MS is good about replacing their peripherals.

Picked up 2 of the MS Basic Optical mice at OM today. Using it right now. Great for an all purpose mouse. For $4.99, it's great.

that black mouse looks like a belkin (from the box, knew before i clicked bigger pic), not necessarily a "no-name"
anybody care to debate the merits of ps2/usb? i have noticed a difference, wonder if others have also
what version of software is being used also?

USB - if you're gaming, definitely helps (faster transfer rates, using windows mouse settings, and MS mice software). Plus, I've found windows autodetects if you have a mouse with more than 2 buttons on usb.
PS/2 - free's up a USB slot. Autodetect in linux (doesn't matter what flavor of it you're using). No difference in performance to USB if you don't play games.
🙂

I am using the MS Basic from the OM ad, and it is quite fine for gaming. You have to move it pretty darn fast to get it to skip. My $29 Logitech skips a lot more easily.
