Optical drives & XP

Hi,

Something has gone really bad in my system.

No optical drive is seen by XP Pro. I have an onboard ata drive, a firewire drive, and I tried a virtual drive.

Things I have done to try and fix this is:
Reload drivers
boot into save mode
uninstall drivers allowing xp to reload them.
turned off all startups
turned off machine-restarted
seen Ata drive in bios
banged my head on the desktop (hard)

Nothing seems to get the drives to be seen. This xp has been on this system for a good 3 years. so is it time to reinstall.. or perhaps use the xp disk to restore the system? I dont have system restore turned on.

P-4 3.0
2gigs of ram
Ati 9600 Agp card
Intel MB

any suggestion welcome.

I went to the movies and said to myself when I returned home if I did not get a result or find a solution from here I was going to reinstall XP.. The link to Mr. Bills site worked great.
