Optical drives not working

So here is the deal I was playing quake 4 and suddenly the game froze so i was forced to do
a cold boot (at least thats what I understand its called) and upon start up both my optical drives where missing so i rebooted and launched the bios and restart and got my drives back. (note hte bios is updated to its newest version.
But next restart I was confronted with the same problem, so I redid my step but only this time the did not come back. I checked the settings for slave and master and all where set to auto. So then I opened my case and checked the wiring but everything was fine, and also both the drives show sign of activity when starting up.
Anyways I tried diffrent combinations of the pins on the drives and switch them, also tried cable select and booting each of them alone but still with no end result.
Finally I got a new rounded IDE cable and tried that but once again nothing worked.

I'm really lost, anybody have any ideas?

PS both drives are obviously internal, one is a brand new lite-on DVD/CDrw
and the other is a few month old I omega dvd burner.

Looks like your IDE controller went to higher places. Do you have another controller on your MB? Try connecting the opticals to the second / third / fourth port. You might also try only connecting one drive for testing.
