Optical Drive Purchase

I'm considering getting an NEC 3520A DVD burner and a Samsung TS-H352A DVD-ROM drive (also known as the Toshiba SD-M1912) . Both would be connected to my mobo's secondary IDE channel. Is this a good pairing? Would I be better off choosing the same brand for both burner and ROM drive? Thanks.

OS: WinXP Pro
Software: Nero 6
 
Just an idea!
Do you need a burner as well as a reader?
Are you planning to copy (direct DVD to DVD) lots and lots?
If not, why not just get a writer and save some money?
 
As low price as burners are I would add an additional one and if you plan to burn on the fly then connect them on seperate IDE channels.

What's the advantage of having two DVD burners as opposed to having one DVD burner and one DVD-ROM drive?

For a few $'s more you can burn 2 Dupe DVD's @ once and less stress on using one if you share the burners...remember you'll be burning CD's as well...afterwards if you upgrade you can take one of the burners ot and put it in another Rig or External Case to burn on the run with OP's Puters.
 
If you are planning on attempting on-the-fly copies, then you will want your opticals on separate channels. There are conditions where a DVD player is a better choice than a burner. It is up to you to decide if those conditions occur often enough to justify it. But then there is always the option of TWO burners PLUS a player. Add-on drive adapters are cheap. 😉

1. Get a Plextor...I just got one & it is excellent!
2. It is not posible for me to put my reader & writer on seperate ide channels...
so I have both on secondary as you sugjest...(Does not seem to matter which is slave
& I use cable select)...Copying "on the fly" (That is from reader to writer) has to be done at slower speeds (4x in my case) to avoid coasters...but is achievable...
3. In my experience... there is no real advantage or disadvantage to having diferent brand reader-writers, so long as they are compatable. (Of equal specs)...Thats probably why so many comp mftrs are comming out with systems that have diferent brand reader-writers...(HP & Dell - I know of)
4. I would like to know how you like the Samsung reader, as I am looking for one...

Edit: Best results; Turn off anti-virus, screensaver, and anything else you can when writting.
Edit; Also defrag before writting.


 
Check out the new BenQ DW1625 - it will even burn the label side so u can avoid using the Sharpie marker! It has the LightScribe feature, and also does double layer burning.
 
After some thought...One advantage with the same brand reader-writer is the same media compatability for both drives.
