Optical cable will not stay in Sony STR-K9900P

So I have an old sony 6.1 HTiB that has done the job for quite some time. However I am in the market for a new HD TV and PS3 and want to hook at least the PS3 up with the optical cable. My problem is that the input has broken and so the optical cable will not stay inside anymore. (The cable does not snap in anymore, it just kinda dangles and falls out, but it works if i hold the cable in there).

Question 1
I was thinking about just taking some epoxy and "making" it fit. If i was extremely careful, would this be an OK solution? I just dont want to spend more than 20 bucks repairing this.

Question 2
If I win the lottery and get a 7.1 receiver, from what I read most all 7.1 are backwards compatible and can play 6.1 ex & es. Is this true? I have my 6.1 set installed and I dont want to crawl in the attic again.

I'd say just use some tape or some other removable adhesive to hold it in there. Try pulling on it a little bit to make sure the method works under some stress.

As for 6.1 vs 7.1... I'm not really sure. I've never seen them mention 6.1 in any setup manual for an AVR that I own, but that doesn't mean it's not possible. At worst, you'd just lose your rear center channel (drop to 5.1), which probably isn't the biggest deal.
