Optical audio connection wont work!!!

Okay forgive me if I sound like a novice but im having an issue. I have a DVD/Recieve that has an optical plug in the back, and my Hercules Game Theater XP with the Drive Bay Control center ALSO has an optical IN and optical OUT plug. Now i have my speakers connected to the DVD/Reciever, and I want to play sound through my sound card and use the reciever speakers to listen. Now i can do this fine with RCA plugs. no problem there, but I bought an Optical cord today and plugged one end into the Game THeater OUT and the other end into the DVD/Reciever plug but there's no sound? DO i need to enable optical feature or something either on the Game THeater Drive or the DVD/Reciever? I'd like to use an Optical connection but i can't figure how to get it to work. If anyone has some ideas please send them my way. BTW the DVD/Reciever is a Sony DAV-S300.
 
You probably need to enable the S/PDIF out on the sound card, usualy this can be done in the advanced button under the main volume in the volume control.
